I’ve done many strange things to my mouth in order to produce ANY sound using this flute. The flute is mute. There is no whistle, no whizz, no little horrible squeal… Isn’t it suspect?
It seems to me that even Rhonda Larson in person wouldn’t take any sound out of my instrument.
The issue is that I can’t get any noise. I’ve seen many videos of people playing flutes, it doesn’t help. Maybe there is something missing inside this flute, a kind of whistle of something. Do you have a wooden side- blown flute like mine? Please, take a look and tell me if there is something inside it. Is it totally empty?
No, there definitely shouldn’t be anything like that inside the flute. Or anything at all, in fact. It should indeed be “totally empty”. No whistle, no trumpet mouthpiece, nothing. Forming a proper embouchure and blowing across the hole is indeed the answer to your problem. I think it’s very unlikely that your flute would not sound fine if played by someone who can already form an embouchure. Is there someone who can already play flute near you? Or a music shop or something? Take it to them and get them to show you how to make a sound.
It is totally empty, there’s just the cork on the left of the blow hole, that closes the flute on one side, of course. Smaller flutes are more difficult to blow, the hole is smaller and it gives more resistence before getting the sound (or anything). You can try to give it to anyone you know to see if the can make any sound out of it, some people get it before others. Or just continue trying. Or get a bigger flute, practice with it and then try this one again.
[crossed in cyber-space with Othannen’s message above]
The flute should be a hollow tube, blocked at the upper end (between the hole you blow across and the end) by a cork. As has been mentioned, the sound is produced by blowing a fine stream of air across the top hole so that it is split at the far edge of the hole. There shouldn’t be any kind of mechanism— whistle head, membrane, wind chimes, or otherwise—inside the tube.
Sounds like you would profit from dropping by a music store or finding someone who plays flutes and letting them try. If they can make it sound, then spend a few minutes letting them instruct you.
Paulina, I assume you play Flute already, if so send its ass back to where ever you bought it and buy a Flute that will work…say a Tipple, Burns, Sweetheart, etc the list goes on
Don’t apologise for lack of knowledge. You asked. Staying ignorant without asking would be much worse.
Now, it will take you months more - maybe years - before you start to be happy with the sound you make. If you ever do. But boy, is it satisfying just trying! Much luck with your flute. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy mine.
I searched in German, Eric … and nichts. Just a few Dutch sites selling used ones or new-old stock. Hohner.de doesn’t list them. I’m guessing they’re no longer offered. Essentially a soprano recorder with a fife head.
Thanks Denny…didn’t think of trying pocket flute in association with Hohner…tried transverse and other terms. As usual, you cut right to the heart of the matter.
MTGuru - How odd the sites are all Dutch…why do they control the world’s supply of Hohner Picket Flutes? Methinks there is a Dutch conspiracy afoot.
One of my wife’s best friends is Dutch, and I’ve always suspected that her and her people were up to no good. First the wooden shoes, then the wooden windmills, and now the wooden pocket flutes. Definitely too many wooden things to just be coincidence!
