My whistles are laughing!

Yep, my laughing whistles arrived today. Standard soprano D and a tuneable PVC low D. At first, I thought the tuning was terrible on the low D, but then I realized I put the fipple on the wrong end of the tube! Very chiffy tone that seems to be capable of a range of colors wider than most whistles. I haven’t played this one much yet, though, and will comment on it more in a few days.

I love love love the high D. My Burke narrow bore composite is now for sale… The laughing is the quietest, sweetest whistle I’ve heard yet. I’m really blown away by it. I’ve never heard such a pure tone come from a whistle. It doesn’t clog as quickly as my hoover whitecap, but it does clog fairly quickly. Still, it is manageable. Did I mention that I love this whistle? It takes a lot of control to play it, but boy does it sound great. It reacts to playing differently than other whistles do, it seems. Maybe it’s the back pressure. It sounds very legato.

Welcome to the fan club

Wow, I didn’t know he was doing PVC low D’s now. He used to do aluminum ones but discontinued them, as I understand it. Got any pics?

There’s only one shiny Precioussss!

I don’t have a functional digital camera. It’s a white PVC pipe (almost looks like bone!) with a bulging joiner and the mouthpiece looks as much like the brass whistle’s as can be achieved by carving. It has kindof a throaty sound to it. I’d say it sounds more flutey than a chieftain, but with a similar basic tone. The tuning’s quite good.

I dunno, I regret buying it now that I am getting flute #4, the low whistles just don’t get played very much. I may offer it for sale in a few weeks but I need to think about it first. It’s really great.

The soprano D… Well, I want to be buried with it, I think.

Here are some photos of both the whistles. It’s the best I could do with my lousy digicam.

You’re lousy digicam does a pretty good job.

What kind of prices did you pay?

Mike

The problem is that I can charge the battery for a day, and then it will take about 10 photos before dying.

I forget now. I think the total for both whistles was $140 or so. Pretty amazing.

Prices here.

The PVC low D is a mighhty fine whistle. I’m having trouble covering the holes well, but the spacing isn’t outrageous, I just need practice. It’s similar to my silkstone. Tonally, this is a very chiffy whistle (if I understand the term correctly). It’s not pure like the high D, it’s got a lot of ffffff in a very good way. It actually kinda reminds me of the copeland I’ve played.

It has a good amount of backpressure and is very easy to blow. It’s also probably the most balanced sounding whistle I’ve heard yet; the high A and B are of reasonable indoor volume and the low D is still quite audible. I’m very impressed by that.
