My New Susato

A fellow C&Fer gave me his Susato Soprano D that he had “lying around” and I got it in the mail today! I love it! I thought I would have to wait till some special occassion to get a Susato, but today feels like Christmas to me.

I can’t tell you very much technical stuff about it, being just a housewife in Tulsa and not in the least bit musically knowledgeable…but I can tell you what I do like about it.

  1. I like the nice round tone. There is definitely a different type of sound from it than I get with my Feadóg. It sounds good in every way to me!

  2. I like the way it feels on my fingers. Smooth…not so sharp as the brass.

  3. I like the way it fits my lower lip. Now that may sound silly, but I don’t have to “hold on” so tight with this Susato as I do with my Feadóg. It doesn’t seem to want to move around so much on my lip.

All in all…I have a new favorite whistle. I believe it’s a small-bore Kildare. My sincerest thanks, my friend.

Here is a picture of me playing it for my boys while they are dancing around. Three guesses what tune I’m playing? Kim

I just recently bought a Susato. I like it. It does have a difficult high register though. I personaly kind of like the sound, but it does sound recorderish. Enjoy!

“Small World”?

And stop refering to yourself as “pudgy” from now on, Kim, all right?!

Yep! LOL

Seriously, though…you don’t pity that poor couch?

Hey Kim,

Did you see that Other Photo that Gary posted of “you” in another thread?

The one on the horse?

Yes. It looked more like you than the one of me looked like me.

I don’t think I resemble the horse or the girl!

C’mon Kim…you look fit and slim in that photo. What throws me is that the photo looks like it’s from the 70’s. Did anyone else notice that, or is it just me?

I bought the Susato D, Eb and C set back in May (for my birthday present to myself). I also love the sound.

Prior to that I played a Feadog D, and it was too difficult to hit the high D and much too squeaky. Tweaking it with blue tack helped, but it is nothing compared to the Susato.

I also have a Walton’s Little Black which is almost as easy to play as the Susato, but has a much more ‘breathy’ sound. The ‘round’ clear tone of the Susato is much nicer to my ear.

LOL! The couch is from the 70s. It was my parents when I was in high school (I graduated in 1981) and then my brother had it for a while and now I’ve had it for about 7 years!

Oh, and the carpet is probably that old too. We just moved in to this house 3 years ago, but we don’t want to replace the carpet or the couch until the boys are old enough to know not to barf on them.

K

Snoogie, I had the same problem with my Feadog Mark I and the same reaction from tweaking – it helped but not enough. Then I ran across the thread on making a kind of replacement blade with a guitar pick. I did that, and bluetacked it on the whistle. Took a while to get it positioned properly, but when I got it right the whistle sounded gorgeous. It jumped from something I almost never played to something I played more than my O’Briain.

Tery

Thanks, I saw that tip with the pick but was afraid to try it as it was my only whistle at that time. Better a poor sounding whistle than a broken one!!

I may give it a try someday when I’m bored and looking for a way to put off doing some of my ‘honey do’ list.

Fortunately, the guitar pick tweak doesn’t harm the whistle at all if you use blue tack or sticky tack to secure it…and it holds just fine.

Are you slagging me?

Hey Kim,

Next time you’re playing, can I come over and join in the dance? Looks like those boys got some cool moves on them that I could borrow.

I think you’re playing “Yes, We have no Bananas”

Kim,
I can’t remember when I’ve seen such a “moving” picture!
Lisa

Yes, I was, but in a kinder/gentler way. But thanks for bringing up the pic again. Everything about it is 70’s to me, the furnishings, the picture on the wall, the lamp, the boys, and (dare I say it)…you!! We’ve seen 2 photos of the boys, both shots from behind. What’s with that?

Also: I’ve come to the conclusion that you enjoy the Susato becuase it drives a certain other person NUTS!!

At least that OTHER photo was you on a horse. They put Kissinger for me, now that really hurts…

Time to move on…well, maybe not TODAY, but sometime soon…

PS Bloomfield is abso. right. No more pudgy. And wassamatter with housewife? you get to practice a lot more than me (I used to be just a househusband when the boys were barf-age)…

That is not me on that horse! I’m only slightly pudgy! And there’s nothing wrong with being a housewife…in fact it’s an art all it’s own and I take great pride in it! And yes, I can whistle almost all I want…the youngest still takes naps, so I can’t then.
