It’s called American Pickers and it’s only been on for a few weeks here in OZ..
It’s about two blokes,I suppose, guys, seein’ that we’re in the good ole U.S.A.
from a company called Antique Archeology who travel the country in search of antiques, curios, junk, collectables and basically anything they can re-sell and make a living.
One of my hobbbies is restoring/tinkering with old machinery and collecting old stuff.I’ve been at a 100 year old Oil Engine, weighing in at about 5 tons for the last 10 years or so and i’m getting reasonably close to an attempt to start it…can’t rush into things you know !
This show has great appeal to me and like minded backyard engineers/collectors.I’m amazed at the stuff they find in old sheds and farms in the backwoods of America.Sheds that hav’nt been opened for 50 years
,spilling over with all manner of treasure.
A lot of the folks are older folks who’ve had this treasure all their lives and it’s interesting to see the anguish on their faces as they decide whether to sell or not…
Sure,it’s a bit ‘staged’ at times but it’s great to see real people, real Americans that you’d nevere get to ‘meet’ otherwise.
A great programme…comes with a weedie rating of 10 out of 10..
Jeez,I’m the only fan
… be there no other junk fanciers in Chiffland ?
blink…zzznxx…huh…whaaa?
Oh, sorry, weedie. I been nappin’. ![]()
You’re right, it is an entertaining show. I try to imagine myself doing the same thing - seems like a lot of fun, actually - but, man…that’s a lot of driving around with the same guy, day in and day out, mile after mile, and you can’t get away if he’s eaten a bad curry or something. Makes me wonder how many times they’ve come close to killing each other off-camera. ![]()
Hey there Nano,
Yes,I thought the very same thing while watching an episode last night..especially if a deal went sour…and perhaps it was the fault of ONE of them.
Last night, they went to an old blokes’ (he must have been close to 90 years old) farm and left the poor old gent waiting outside his shed for over an hour..When they came out with some goodies they wanted to buy,the old bloke was far from impressed from being kept waiting for so long, and decided not to sell anything..
There would have been some vibes in the van on the way home from that ‘pick’ I’d say.
I figure they must’ve gotten pretty philosophical about the ups and downs of the deals end of things; they’ve been in business for, what? Around 20 years? So they must be doing something right.
But I share your fascination with junk. I’ve made art from junk - pardon me: objets trouvés - and I like keeping old things in use. I’ve got a battered old aluminum colander with a patterned drainhole layout from it’s gotta be the '40s, and it’s my go-to over the newer and probably better plastic one. My out-and-about reading glasses are a re-lensed pince-nez I picked up at an antique shop. Little stuff like that.
We’ve had a surge of these types of shows over the last couple of years in the US. We also have Storage Wars (people vulturing in on storage facilities that others lost the ability to pay for), Pickin’ Chicks (basically American Pickers but with 2 pretty ladies), and the pawn shop shows like Pawn Stars and Hardcore Pawn.
I heard an interesting story several months ago about how these types of shows tend to become popular in rough economic times because it feeds this fantasy that any of us could be sitting on an undiscovered treasure to deliver us from our economic woes.
I love Frank and Mike! What until they show the episode where they pick a farm that has a emu on it, you’ll really get a kick out of that one.
I watch these shows. Pickers isn’t my favorite. I don’t connect with Frank and Mike and the junk that they find is not the junk that I’m interested in.
I think the guys on Storage Wars should cooperate rather than compete than they’d be in a win-win situation. Barry should sell the rest of the stuff in his storage units to Jarrod, then they’d all be winners.
But what I really want to see happen is after these guys tell us what they think all this stuff is worth and the calculator quotes the high end number, they should walk right on over to Pawn Stars and see what they can get for their stuff in the real world and not just their own heads. I think Chumley should get his own show.
