These aren’t my dogs, but they look very much like them…
Over the weekend I picked up a new pup, a Dogue de Bordeaux, or sometimes referred to as a French Mastiff (not exactly correct, but lot’s of people can’t correctly say Dogue de Bordeaux properly, so what the hell).
If you’ve ever seen the movie Turner and Hootch, you’ve seen a Bordeaux (Hootch is a Bordeaux).
Her name is Mabel, she’s two years old and she’s a total sweetheart. Her owner was activated and sent to texas for six months before going to Iraq, so naturally his family is going with him, but they can’t have the dog on base. My father works with the soldier’s brother and, when he heard about the dog, asked if I wanted her. I offered to buy Mabel from them, but they simply gave her to me based on my Father’s reputation as a former breeder (Newfoundland Landseers), knowing she would go to a good home. My daughter and other doggie just love her, and she get’s along great with them! I couldn’t be happier!
Mabel looks a lot like this one, but she has some black coloring on her snout and a white triangle on her chest.
She’s usually been pretty dry (as far as a jowly dog can be ) until she sees the neighbors filthy cat (I guess she wants to eat it, and one day I might indulge her!), then she gets full on foot-long slingers that end up on the wall!
I tell you what, I’ve always had a soft spot for doggies, but just in the space of a weekend this one has really worked her way into my heart!
This bulldogue francais sends greetings to Mabel, the dogue of Bordeaux! It would be a lot of fun to see some pictures of both dogs. The large dog in the pictures has a worried look on her face—I can always relate to that . I’m glad she found a good home and I’m sure the previous owners were very relieved. And say hi to the little one for me too.
One of these days I’m going to get myself some web space to post a bunch of my photos on. I keep putting it off, but one day soon.
I’ll post pics of Mabel and Joey, my Chihuahua, when I do.
Mr. Clean Erasers work real well on “dog buggers” on the walls.
I know this from experience.
I buy them by the case.
We had a boxer 20 years ago when my dad died. I was 4 1/2 months pregnant at the time, and I only had ONE dress that still fit for the funeral. I was trying to prevent being used as a napkin by Porky before we left the house. He was standing across the kitchen table from me - shook his head, and slobber arched up OVER the table and landed on me!
Hey, that’s a great idea! I’ll run out and get some today! I’ve been trying to get them before they crust up.
Thankfully most of our newer furniture is that microsuede stuff that just wipes right off…
well, I should rephrase that…
everything, including Ice Cream, baby spitup, tomato sauce, blood, etc wipes off the microsuede…the slobber just smears around!!!
Actually “French Mastiff” isn’t that far off the mark, since “dogue” in French refers to the Molossian (aka Mastiff) type (as opposed to “chien,” which is the generic word for “dog”) “Bordeaux Mastiff” would be a closer translation, though. The same is true in other Romance languages, by the way: Dogo Argentino, for example, is accurately translated into English as “Argentine Mastiff.”
Our Great Pyrenees probably isn’t as copiously slobbery as your dogue, but I would bet that his slobber is just as sticky. That stuff is practically adhesive. I suspect the real secret behind 3M’s Post-It Notes is dog drool.
Bloodhounds know the secret recipe for those sticky ropes of drool too.
And have the flews to give them that extra push for more airborne lift.
I always dreaded showing in a ring next to one of those breeds. At least if you’re showing one you have an excuse to have the stuff stuck on you- if you’re not… And heaven forbid it gets in a Skye’s coat!!!
Congratulations on your new furkid! Looking forward to seeing pix of her; she sounds adorable.
Not that familiar with the breed; the adults are majestic, so I was curious what they looked like as pups …just thought I’d post these up… can never get enough puppy pictures…and the little Dogues are sooooooo cute! Couldn’t you just eat them up?
It’s threads such as this that make me glad I got into poodles! No drool and no shedding! (Of course, the trade-off is you have to figure out how to entertain a dog who is as bright as your average 13-year-old human kid and who can think of endless ways to “entertain” himself when you’re not looking! ).
