My name is John Daker

Damn you, Boing Boing, for ruining my weekend.

I’m sure the captions will be very helpful especially to our British and Irish friends for understanding such unique American vocabulary as “whep”, “scrum scree” and “Aaahhhhhhhhhhhooooooo-uulgh”.

When a fish bites your heel
But it looks like an eel …
That’s a Moray!

If you think of a firth
That is northward of Perth …
That’s a Moray!

Astounding

I’ve never seen that before.

I don’t understand. Why did that make me laugh and spit coffee? Please explain.

Schadenfreude. And the “coffee reflux reflex” which causes you to expel hot liquids during humorous situations lest you inhale steaming death.

Yeah, I suppose so. Then I showed it to my buddy last night, and it had barely begun when he was reduced to fits of sputtering laughter, the likes of which I had not seen him exhibit before.

I think that people’s reaction to this video should be the topic of electroencephalographic research.

The whole thing was so perfectly flawed at every point; you have to admit that the piano player was definitely well up there in her own right. And I keep asking myself, What kind of audience would have attended this little moment in Hell? What was everyone’s relationship to each other? What occasion could there possibly have been for everyone to be there? Were there other acts and were they just as awkward? And never mind asking why it was filmed; one might well ask: why was the film not destroyed? I want to know all of this.

But yer man of course steals the show. He was profoundly unequal to his task, he had to know somehow that he was unprepared, yet it didn’t stop him from bringing what probably goes on in his shower to the public stage, and from there on to a humiliation. But here’s the kicker for me: with every mounting fail, he pressed on (you have to give him props for that) as if nothing had happened, or at least as if nothing mattered at all. And perhaps it doesn’t, but that’s for another time.

I guess that if he had wiped his brow, shaken his head, and left the stage, I would have seen that as normal behavior and my reaction would hardly have registered; but his eerily calm persistence despite “stage death” was analogously almost zombie-like, and the wild card that kept me riveted and entertained. He seemed like a space alien in human skin trying to “pass”.

Googling turned up the pianist’s name as “Reva Unsicker”. From the intro in the video I understand she is a music teacher. Because she says “For the students on this show tonight…” I think this might be a recital.

The uploader of one of the above videos claims it’s from “Reva Cooper Unsicker’s 1990 public access singing show” but I can’t confirm that.

No … It’s from American Idol!

The photographers will slap us,
And you’ll f**k a jar in the Port of Graffar.

Wait … what??
