I went to KC’s gig tonight. I really enjoyed hearing whistles used to play Chinese folk music. The airs were hauntingly beautiful to the point that I was kicking myself for not having taken a tape recorder of some kind. Next time I will! Good job, KC!

Thanks, Blackhawk, I am very happy to see you tonight and thank you for your compliment. I only played 3 and half Chinese Airs and the Scarbrough Fair. I wish I could play one or two more Chinese Airs on Irish whistle but after I had a little problem about the last whistle tune that I lost my confident in my Irish Whistle playing tonight. Hope through practice I will play more Chinese Airs in my future gigs.

The Burke Low G (C major) gives the most haunting effect and is the best Irish Whistle for Chinese Airs. But I played Chinese Airs on Burke Bb a lot, because Bb needs less air than Low G. Tonight only the first whistle tune was on Burke Low G. Someday I would like to play most of the Chinese Airs on Low G.

I hope some kind soul will take a recording device along to one of these shows and post a few tunes for those of us who won’t be able to attend.
I’ve been really wanting to hear KC play ever since I found out he played Chinese airs on harmonica and whistle.
I’ve never heard anyone play that kind of music on that choice of instruments before, but I’m sure it must sound wonderful.

I’ve been learning some Chinese (and a couple Japanese) folk songs that I got out of a piano songbook (“Folk Song of China, Japan, Korea” by Betty Warner Dietz and Thomas Choonbai Park). I love the sound of these tunes–perhaps because they remind me of some melodies from childhood–although, as a rank amateur, they only sound good in my poor deluded head. :blush: :blush:

Do you have any suggestions for sources of Chinese airs? I haven’t been able to find anything other this piano songbook.

I truly wish I could hear you play. Any way you can post some files to your website?

Thanks for all of you who are interested in Chinese Airs. Those songs I played at my gigs were memorized through my childhood and teenage years. I am over 50 years now. The period of those Chinese Airs is probably from 1900 - 1970. Chinese have their own way to write music sheet. I was thinking to translate the Chinese Airs into western music sheet, may be it is the time to work on it now. I heard some software for writing songs. Hope anyone on the C&F message board can provide me the information. I am currently planning to record two CDs, one is Chinese Melodies of Harmonica and the other one is Chinese Melodies of Irish Whistle. I am thinking of contacting Mr. Tony Higgins to learn how to put Chinese Air on line.
