My Gift to Chiff & Fipple: Inside Joanie's Whistle Bag

I just got home from an awesome concert. It was Joanie and Mary all by their lonesomes playing at the Coatesville ¶ Cultural Society, part of the Coatesville Traditional Irish Music Series run by Frank Dalton.

A truly great venue. It was like having two of the best traditional musicians on the planet playing in your living room.

Anyway, Joanie came onstage carrying this big ol’ bag, and then she unwrapped it to show the audience her amazing collection of whistles.

Massive, almost unmanageable, whistle envy, at that point. :boggle:

During intermission, I went up onto the stage to shoot a picture because I thought you all would like the close-up view. There’s also a picture of Joanie laughing as I took the shot when she unveiled the collection. (I think it’s because I yelled, “Hey, work with me, babe …”) I’ll have maybe 18-20 more photos of the concert posted on the site within the next day or two, but in the meantime I built this page on my site just for you:

I know who made that bag!

Great shot! I thought I recognized a few of the heads… What is her favorites I wonder?

It’s always nice to see photos. You are sure lucky with that ITM series. I hope you can get to the Brian McNamara concert. Thanks for the photos. And nice job annie on the lovely whistle case! Nice to see how it is being used.

I’m so glad she likes it so much. LOL! I’m in the process of making a matching case for her flute. (Psst, Joanie, do check your email)

Thanks for that Flamman.

That’s a georgeous whistle roll.

Only the head is visible, but can anyone tell the maker of the whistle showing on the end in the lower right corner of the top picture?

I love how accessible she is. I met her in Cleveland once. She was really nice. If she stops in, I wonder if she’d be so kind as to identify her whistles for us.

Looks like a Burke to me.

A lot of them look like Burkes.

She has an entire collection of Burkes, plays several types, but I believe her very favorite is O’Riordan.

Edited to correct spelling and attempt to make it clearer.

The beak looks longer than a Burke beak to me, but you may be right. Thanks.

I talked with Joanie when she was in Columbus last August for our Irish festival. She said she mostly plays O’Riordans and Burkes.

Oh man, great pictures! Keep up the good work!

WHOA !!

You can say that again!

WHOA !!

And a review of the concert:
