Had to share this with you all as I’m so excited I can hardly contain myself! I’ve been invited to play with a fiddler, banjo player and another whistler! I’ve never even met another whistle player! After 2+ years of playing my time has come! I am practicing like mad of course before we meet this weekend and am hopeful to get to play a tune or two but have no idea what they play on a regular basis. At this point I know they know 2 of the same tunes I can play. It is at someone’s house so no pressure of a public performance. I just got over my fear of playing outdoors a couple of months ago! Yipppeee!

Very nice
A suggestion, bring something to ‘record’ their tunes, so that you can practice them at home and try to play them later on with them, and don’t noodle (try to improvise on tunes you don’t know) and they’ll love you ![]()
Thanks for the tip!
I will refrain from noodling! I really would never attempt a tune I couldn’t play well to a recording. I am just trying to practice now by jumping straight into the tunes instead of my usual doodling warm up. I had already thought about sneaking a recorder in but thought that might be frowned upon. I guess I shouldn’t be sneaky and just ask. ![]()
I feel your excitement, because I’ll have my first session this weekend as well!
I’m a bit (QUITE a bit) nervous, because it’s in an irish pub, with maybe 10 or more musicians.
Anyways, although I don’t know how many tunes I’ll be able to play, I’m excited for attending a session.
Good luck with yours!!
Cheers,
Martin
Oh, yeah, you kindly ask them if they mind. They might not want to, but usually when people see you are willing to put the effort in learning tunes, they’ll be impressed with your motivation on learning their tunes. I prefer house sessions over pub sessions, it’s nice because you can hear the music and can filter a bit and have like minded people around. Keep us posted! ![]()
Thanks Azalin and Ill be sure to keep you posted! Good luck to you too Bothrops! I think I heard a recording of your playing once? I thought you were very good. Exciting times these ![]()

Excellent. I can only imagine your excitement. Enjoy!
Will look forward to hearing what happened.

Heck, the public performance part is half the fun.
I only ever play my whistle for myself. If other people are listening and like it, that’s great. If not, then they can get a pair of ear plugs.
Enjoy the session, but remember that you’re going to enjoy it a lot more if you’re playing for yourself, not the other session players. If they have valid concerns about your playing (ie, about noodling, or bad timing), that’s fine, but otherwise play for yourself, without worrying about what you may or may not be doing wrong. Sessions are twice as fun if you relax and enjoy the session.
Fun! Glad you have folks to play with!
Well, I would love to report on my first session but alas I still haven’t had one! My kids were sick
So I stayed home and looked after the my little ones. Oh, the sacrifices mommies make! Hope to make the next one in 2 weeks time.
Hope you had a great session bothrops.![]()
PS Kids are all better now.
