My first job in 30 years!

Woo hoo! As of June 4, I’ll be an OR nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital in Troy. I just had my interview and they offered me the job. I am majorly psyched. (For those who don’t know, this is my first “job” since I’ve been self employed as a podiatrist for those 30 years-- now I’ll get to work for someone else and let THEM worry about the business!)

Congratulations!!

I hope it goes well for you!

Nursey! Nursey! I feel worsey! :astonished:

I’m excited for you Paul! [cliche]It seems like just yesterday you were bandying the idea of nursing school about, and now look at you![/cliche]

Paul…
You must be a tough old bird! I avert my gaze just THINKING about the OR!!!

Paul,

Congratulations! OR nurse is it? Beware of Friday nights and every night of the full moon. Drunks on Friday nights and, shall we say “unusual” personalities during the full moon.

Peter

Congratulations  ! I agree with emmline that it hardly seems long enough ago that you were talking about your plans to go to nursing school—I’m glad it has all worked out so well. Did your wife graduate from nursing school a while back as well? Perhaps I am confused.

Congratulations, Paul. One more nurse in the world to ease the shortage! Maybe you’ll even scrub in for some podiatric surgery. That would be fun when you tell the podiatrist, “Watch that tendon!”, especially if he/she doesn’t know that you are a podiatrist too.
Enjoy not having to study for five hours after you get home from work! And you get a paycheck!
Mike, RN

Will you nget to be called Dr. Nurse?

Congratulations, Paul!

Congrats, Paul! Maybe you’ll get your own reality-TV show called “Nurse, MD” or “Doctor, RN”.

Congratulations!

When you’re an OR nurse are you regularly scheduled to work as a part of a specific doctor’s team
or just work for any surgeon in general?

Congrats Paul, 30 years is a very long time. good luck with the job. I hope you like it.

That’s fantastic, Paul! Did you have to go for more schooling after the preliminary stuff to get your RN in order to work in the OR?

Mr Izz is in nursing school right now (first semester). Judging on what he’s had to endure thus far (which isn’t all that long), my hat is off to anyone who gets through it. It’s a very time consuming and grueling curriculum. Congratulations!

Congratulations! I too remember you starting on this career change. I admire anyone who can do that.

(Quick! She’s got the tin foil hat off! Say something scary!)

How awesome! Congratulations, Paul… I wish you every bit of happiness in your new endeavor!!

Good job Paul.

I do have some reminders. I’m married to an RN with 35 yrs on one job or another. I think that part of the job description includes periodic observations that nurses are under-paid and under-appreciated. You should also note that if anything ever goes amiss in the OR, the default explanation from most medical institutions is “Human Error-Nurse”.

The other area that may be new to you is the popular culture’s understanding of the loose sexual mores of all nurses. Of course as a male nurse yoiu must be gay

Reading this it seems serious. I didn’t mean it to be. Nurses are usually the people who provide the humanity in our health care “system”. As my wife has accurately taught me, when patients and families need to know what’s going on, skip the doc and talk to the nurse. That said, it’s a profession about which our culture has some very odd ideas and endless opportunities for all sorts of humor.

Go for it and have fun.

Congratulations. Sounds like a perfect fit.

So will this leave less time or more time for whistle-making?

More! No more night school. Plus, I’ll have to be on call on rotating weekends. This means I have to stay within a half hr of the hospital: enforced time at home and in the shop!
