My first haiku

With all the haiku related things I’ve seen around here I thought it high time I did something about it.

First a question. Is a haiku only three lines? Or can it be several sets of three lines?

Depending on the answer here’s my haiku or haikus:
(A true and tragic tale)

Down the road twelve miles
But where has my backpack gone.
Twas last seen on roof.

Drive to last exit
On the opposite highway
Backpack lies shredded.

Run in early morn
To salvage all that remains
Watch big truck tires smash.

Crushed circuits Palm dead
Harmonicas ripped apart
Whistles strewn in ditch

Look see what remains
Open zipper there behold
Kit Kat bar unharmed.

Haikus are three lines, so you have written a string of
them. The form Dale has adopted here for
haiku competitions, when we have them,
is 5 syllables for the first line, seven for the
second, and 5 for the third.

But there’s no reason to write that way
in general. Write some more! Best

I’ve also heard that Haiku can go thus:

Five Syllables
Seven Syllables
Nine Syllables
Seven Syllables
Five Syllables

That’s how I write some of my own Haiku, and it makes for a neat sounding contrast.

Hey, I didn’t notice that that haiku was formally
correct. Very nice!

Can a falling leaf
Return to the maple tree?
A green butterfly.

I mean the five, seven, five form–not that
anybody should take it seriously! I meant Gonzo’s,
in fact, but I’m delighted by everybody’s haikus.
