Trying to copy several pieces in ABC notation and I am running a cross a few questions.
1)Reading from a beat up xerox copy I have noticed that there is a w at the end of the staff on the same position as the note on the continued line. For example.
|W_ |___ O|______ |___
\
O|________ |___ |___ |___
Was this ever standard practice, or just something perhaps added by the original owner of the book?
Is there a way of placing the Dal segno mark into ABC notation? D.C. al Coda?
For example in The King of Prussias March there are 2 Dal segno marks located after the red bar lines
X: 1
T: The King of Prussias March
M:C|
L:1/8
K: D
V: 1 clef=G

Yes, seems to me I learned the “w” many moons ago in music theory classes as a standard notational convention. I have my old music exercise sheets where I’ve written the “w” at the end of lines. Guessing at this point, I think I thought it stands for German “weiter”, meaning “further” or “continued”.
Yes, the ABC 2.0 draft standard gives you “S” as a predefined alias for the +segno+ glyph, and +D.S.+ as a predefined symbol for “Dal Segno”. Just insert these at the appropriate places. Both are rendered correctly in abcm2ps, and should work in other programs that support ABC 2.0.
Thinks for the link. The references I was using seemed to be more basic and lacked certain things.
Hmm, it seems that !trill! is now +trill+.
I have been using ABCJ to check my work because the other programs I’ve tried seemed to be a bit more quirky. I’ll have to see if there is a nice front-end for abcm2ps on the PC.
Yes, the “!” notation is now deprecated in favor of “+”.
The Concertina.net converter uses abcm2ps as its back end, and its support for 2.0 is pretty complete. So that can also be handy for checking your work, which looks good so far.
I’ve been using that converter to double check my work (and it seems backwards compatible with “!”), but a real time see-as-you-type program helps out.
I’m starting up again on an old project, and want to get things entered right the first time.
