I am so ashamed that I have lived in this little town for almost four years and last night was the first time I visited the county museum (my church choir was singing carols there).
I only had a minute to look before we were on (or horribly, horribly “off” in my case), but the museum had a large display of simple system flutes, piccolos and fifes! I didn’t get a chance to really examine them and check out names, but I saw every number of keys, lots of different woods, variations of every sort. There was an 8 foot display case filled with flutes!
My neighbor is a volunteer there and I am going to try to weasel a test drive out of him. At the very least, I’m going to go back and examine them better.
It’s like a cornucopia of flutedom just a few blocks from my house, and I never knew!
Thanks for posting this - I’d love to get a look at the collection - hopefully it is within a one-day round trip from Cincinnati. Could I get some more information on where it is and who to contact? If the flutes are not cataloged I could probably help with that as well. Hopefully we could post some details and photos on the web if the museum is OK with the idea. That’s really cool! I wonder how they came into such a collection? Probably donated by a single person who lived (or possibly still lives) near you. Please let us know when you find out more! (And I too hope it’s near Cincy – I have family there, which is a great excuse to visit!)
