Hello Forum,
I am thinking of submitting a few tunes onto the forum. Unfortunately my knowledge is somewhat limited in “how to do it”.
I have a decent quality tape recorder and mic’. Also a mini disk recorder.
How do I convert any recorded tunes I do to MP3 for submission to the forum. 
All help and advice gratefully received

Hi Joseph,
Is your Minidisc one of the newer type (NetMD or HiMD), that allow you to move the sound files onto you computer using a USB connection.
If it is let me know and I’ll post how to convert to MP3. Although it does involve downloading and installing several free programmes.
If not you may need to run your mike through a preamp (you may be able to use you tape recorder for this job) and into your computer’s soundcard, with a relevent programme on the receiving end. (Not something I’ve done but I’m sure there are those here who have).

A more permanent means of recording onto your computer is to get software specifically for this. I use the SONY Sound Forge Audio Studio audio editing and production software for this. All you need is a sound card for your PC (if you don’t already have one), and then you can download an MP3 converter from http://www.download.com/ to convert your WAV recording into MP3. You ought to be able to plug your recording device into a USB port, or you could use a PC microphone and skip the tape/minidisc recorder altogether.
I use the el cheapo mic that came with my PC for recording stuff to post on Clips and Snips, and it seems to work just fine. I am not looking for studio quality recordings, for those I have four Marshall condenser mics and a separate 4-track mini studio.

Thanks for the tips on MP3’s. The Minidisc recorder is probably dated in terms of the speed of development for new technology. It’s a Sony MZ-R30 (Digital Recording MD Walkman).
Joseph offered some advice (thanks) with a link to a site so may be this is the way to go.
I’ll give it a try and if I make a “balls” of it I’ll return to ask again and contact you guys off list for a more in-depth “how to do it”.

I forgot to mention that you can also download recording programs there too… both MP3 converter and Recording prograqms are free. The recording software I have downloaded is “Audacity, version 1. 2. 2”. I have had good results with this software it is easy to use and has a few nice effects (if that is what you like) to choose from too. the first Clips and Snips recording I made was using this software.

Sorry to break this thread (only temporarily) but I forgot to mention: You posted a while back that it is not a good idea to use aluminium near to the wood of the pipes. I forget the exact context it was in but why is that
Does it interact with the wood in some way? I ask because I have seen some sets of pipes (mainly GHB ) with aluminium mounts. Possibly done for economic reasons. Anyway, I’m curious.

The wood has a bad reaction to the aluminum, to the best of my knowledge and the memory of a past thread. The oxidation of the aluminum eats away at the wood. I think that the wood in questions was blackwood. Again, I am only repeating what I have heard… no personal experience here.
