Hi,

Can anyone help with the following:

  1. A good sounding Low D Whistle midi instrument does this exist, if so where do I get it ?

  2. I have heard about midi players which is the best midi player, Scorch ABC, to learn music from which is most popular ?

  3. What MP3 to Midi to Notation software would you recommend ?

If I wanted to get Davey Spillane - Inagh music notation how would I do this ?

a midi player can help you to start of, this one is free and it has tablature. http://sharewaredirect.tripod.com/karaoke.htm

but you can’t depend on this forever, there’s a lot of mistakes in midi files, you’ll always need your ears. after a while you’ll need roni’s slowdowner, it’s shareware, but there’s a free trail version. it can sow down cd’s, mp3, without changing pitch. you can also put it in any pitch you like.

There was a midi wind instrument years ago, but I’ve never seen anything similar to a whistle. Here’s</a](http://members.aol.com/whitfiel/artwind.htm">Here’s</a)> a page on it.

Audio to Midi is actually a tricky problem. I’ve seen software that can decode a single, basic melody line into midi, but I’m almost certain the speed and ornmentation of a whistle would prevent it from working. I doubt this stuff could handle Mary Bergin’s playing!

I think your best bet is to look at software that slows down a tune but can maintain the pitch. I use Transcribe</a](http://www.seventhstring.demon.co.uk/xscribe/">Transcribe</a)>, it’s a great piece of software and it’s been a big help in figuring out what some good players are doing. There’s a plugin for winamp also, and some folks use The Amazing Slow Downer, but I don’t have any experience with those.

From someone who is just learning, I opted to just use the slowdowner and play it by ear. I agree with the mistakes statement regarding midi files. I had a few and tried it that way and had to make a few adjustments.

I chose simple tunes for the lower octaves at first and am now starting to zero in on tunes in the higher octaves. An example of this would be “The bonny lass of fyvie”. It is made for the bagpipes but serves well to help learn the higher octaves on the whistle.

i don’t think any midi player can produce a low D sound.

roni’s slowdowner can put a high D on cd or mp3 into a low D, by pitching it -12 down

That’s going to depend on the MIDI player or device in use. Try most of the woodwind patches until you find something close. I suspect that you’ll end up using the flute patch. It won’t be quite right but will probably be closer than other patches.

The Windows Software Synthesizer has a whistle patch (#79) that isn’t too terrible for soprano whistles, I haven’t tried it down in low-D territory, though.

Of course, getting the right patch is only half the battle. The MIDI files you encounter are going to be very simple affairs that have none of the dynamics of a real whistle performance. MIDI is really only useful for learning the melody, from there you need to apply dynamics and ornamentation on your own.
