Most Annoying Questions?

As an ITM player, all of use (at least in America) are asked some of the most annoying questions such as “What’s your favorite tune?” or “Can you play the Titanic?”. So what is/are your top most annoying recurring questions?

“What’s ITM?”

“Why do all of those songs* sound the same?”

  • in reference to tunes, of course… Possibly so irritating to me as I’m trying my hardest to make them sound different :sniffle:

“What was that one called?”

Only because I can barely remember the tune, much less the title

“Can I have a go on your flute?”

“Can any of you lot sing?”
“How long have you been playing?”
“What’s that instrument called?” (pointing to my flute)
“What’s the name of your band?” (when it’s a session)
“Can I have a go?” (pointing at my fiddle. This one always, without fail, makes me put the fiddle away and leave. Forthwith. And I mean it.)

I’ll tell you what bugs me: punters invariably fawning over the bodhrán like it’s the best thing since sliced bread, ignoring all else. Where is the love?

Oh good. Something where we have it better than you guys. Nobody cares over here. And those who do typically don’t like it.

Well, we do have your neighborhood to consider.

Send them to me, I usually get asked what kind of drum is it I am playing, or “is that a bodhran”. (I have a custom built drum made by Rob Forkner).

This is the drum in question

“Can you guys play insert arbitrary Flogging Molly- or Dropkick Murphy’s song? Pleaaaaaaase? Come on! Well if you can’t do that, what kind of an ‘irish band’ are you supposed to be, huh?”

Not to take anything away from you of course, Davy. I’m just jealous about the fan club. It’s like cleaner wrasses on a grouper.

Sometimes I explain, “We play the dance music.” They usually squint and go, “What?”

The Most Annoying Questions?
The ones I ask, sorry 'bout that.

ITM - Irish Tradition Music

I like talking to and meeting new people, so I don’t mind any of those sort of questions. So long as they don’t ask them while I’m playing…

I wasn’t asking the Annoying Question: “What’s ITM?”. I was giving an example.

Thanks for answering

“I brought my guitar/mandolin/bongos. Can I jam with you? I have a really good ear!”

You actually never hear the term “ITM” in the wild, only as Internet-Speak. “Irish Trad”, sure.

I guess it’s a bit like reacting to a good joke by declaring, “IMO, LOL!”.

To be fair, annoying questions can come from in the trenches:

“What’s the name of that tune?” (Of course I’m not going to know.)

“What was that thing you did? I think it was in the previous set somewhere.” (“What thing?” “I don’t know.”)

“Oh, were you sitting here?” (I suppose the flute and the pint weren’t evidence enough.)

“Shouldn’t you tune?” (How dare they. )

Oh, okay. Good one!

Yeah, I just didn’t want write it out. Hints why it’s only as internet-speak…

You never know, some time will be the first time you actually do know the name, and you would’t want to miss out on that!

“Shouldn’t you tune?” (How dare they. > > )

I’ve found that the only way to deal with those people are to simply do what Seamus Tansey did, and write them a strongly worded open letter and have it read on public radio. Since I did that, people tune after me. Even the box players do.

“Y’all play any Flogging Molly?”
