OK so here’s the way I’m going about learning. I’m NOT using sheet music and I’m NOT writing down diagramatic fingerings. I simply pick up my whistle (Susato D), pick a song from my head to learn, and play and make mistakes and play some more and then some more until I have it. Then I learn another one. Is this a good approach?
It’s half the work. The other have is to listen listen listen to the music you want to play.
Sure it’ll work. There’s two parts to this; learning to play the whistle and learning to play new songs. Some folks try to tackle both at once. S’OK, I guess, but frustrating. Once you know how to play songs you already know on the whistle, there’ll be plenty of time for learning new things.

Listening it good, learning by ear is good, and learning by sheet music is good (if you can’t play by ear, but that’s always a good skill to develop).
