MoNighean Donn Gradh Mo Chridh

Found this during my wanderings through Clips & Snips last night, and it’s beautiful. I’ve checked the usual tune finders, but can’t find notation. Does anyone have that, or know where I might find it?

TIA,
Tery

It IS beautiful, Tery. I hadn’t heard it before, but now I’m going to learn it, too. It’s also very slow…is there any chance you can capture it by ear? It’s the perfect piece to try learning this way, if you can swing it. I only reached the point of being able to learn by ear a few weeks ago, but it has opened up major new vistas for me. It’s more fun, for one thing, but also you learn faster and remember the tunes more easily.

Gorgeous. Any idea what the title means in English? Maybe it’s listed somewhere under
its English title.

Susan

mo= my
nighean= brown
donn= daughter
cridhe= heart

Not sure about what gradh is, perhaps ghost? So maybe it’s something along the lines of My Brown Daughter’s (Ghost), My Heart. :smiley: Any Scottish Gaelic speakers out there??

gradh is love! :slight_smile: So maybe it’s My Brown Daughter, Love (of) My Heart?

I’m not very familiar with Clips and Snips. Where do I go to find this?

Oh boy you’re in for a treat.

The first screen of the Chiff and Fipple Forums have four forums: Whistle, Flute, Uilleann Pipe and Clips and Snips. Go to the tune archive and enjoy.

You’re really killing me. (But, that’s ok.) On the forum index page, there is the Clips and Snips forum and below that, in small print, it says Clips and Snips tunes archive. Click on that, or, just this once, in spite of your question, click just below here.

Let’s see…hmmm…HOW many posts? 785? :slight_smile:

John posted that it was from Silly Wizard’s “Kiss the Tears Away” CD, and right on the track listing is says, Mo Nighean Donn, Grádh Mo Chridhe (My Brown Haired Maiden, Love of My Heart)

Now, who’d a thunk it??

Go Teri Go Go!!! Go Teri Go Go!!!

Oh, Teri be Good!!!

OK, so I’ve taken a few liberties with the classic lyrics, but MAN can you ever name them tunes or WHAT?!?!?! It kinda creeps me out how you rip off names the way you do Teri my girl! :slight_smile:

GOOD ON YA!!!

Bri~

No rippin’ on that one, just reading the CD :slight_smile:

hehe yeah, but can you believe I’ve only gone to Clips and Snips twice? :slight_smile:

I knew where the site itself was, I just meant was it a jig, reel, hornpipe, etc. But I’ve found it.

Blame it on the heat :smiley:

SO, OK, name this tune before bed time, and win a MILLION BUCKS!!! HA HA HA, or at least my undying respect!

Teri, what’s the name of the first and second tunes played in the set on track 11 of Lunasa’s debut???

They call the set: “Mí Na Nollag”

I LOVE these, just wish I had more info on the sets they played…

Thanks!!!

Bri~

You’re right, blackhawk – this might be a good one to start trying to learn by ear. So, let’s see how I do . . .

You mean Kerfunten and Eddie Kelly’s?

It’s right in the track listing

Teri

Sorry Teri, I don’t have the liner notes. The CD’s on loan from a fried (though at the rate I’m going, he may not get it back!) :slight_smile:

Thanks though! Bri~

No problem Brian. As a matter of fact, I don’t own the CD, so I’ve never heard their set. I took a look on amazon’s page to check the listing.

Tery, I’ve only been doing the ear thing for a couple of weeks, but it’s such a feeling of accomplishment when it finally clicks. If you have trouble, revive this thread and I’ll help you. Once you make the breakthrough, it’s like suddenly being able to speak fluent Mandarin. I think there’s some relationship between number of hours spent practicing vs. knowing how it should sound. At least that’s how it seemed to me. But rest assured, I can do it by ear now, so if you get stuck, don’t worry, between the two of us, you’ll have this tune in a matter of days. But for your own progress, give it your best before you ask for help. I think you can get it. You strike me as someone who really wants to get the whole idea of trad playing, and this could be a real turning point for you. Look back for my thread called “Epiphany.” from the last couple of weeks, if you need inspiration.

I’m glad you’re a good sport, Beth! I just couldn’t resist having some fun with you!
