Moisture around fipple-plug

Has anyone had this problem? After playing a whistle for a while, it starts to clog a little, (normal), so you cover the wind-blade hole and blow hard through the mouthpiece. The moisture is forced down into the barrel, but some starts to leak out around the SIDES OF THE PLUG. By this, I mean where the outer sides of the plug meet the inner walls of the tube. It just sort of backs up and beads up on the outside of the fipple and plug.

I have a fine whistle (to remain nameless) that’s leaking a little like that. It’s not really a problem, but I’m wondering if it’s something I should be contacting the maker about. …just hate to be a pest if that’s a common thing with whistles that employ a fipple-plug…

Don’t cover the window and blow. Suck in really hard.

My Oriordan traveller c/d set did this, I just took it as normal.

sponge

I have had a few whistles do that. The only time I felt it needed to be fixed is when I could feel a draft on my chin.

I had a Burke that would do this…if it doesn’t affect the playing, no big deal.

Almost every metal whistle I have does this; they leak at the same place (although I don’t clog-blow them). I can’t imagine why this should be a problem. I guess it’s just hard to make a good seal between two metal surfaces.

Yep, I have a few that do it too. I think that under some circumstances the fipple plug expands and contracts differently than the mouthpiece itself.

Thanks, Tyghress. Now that I know it’s not a problem, I’ll reveal that it’s my Sweetheart Pro D that prompted the question. I’d be more concerned if the plug was wood, probably. My first one arrived with a cracked head, and Walt generously replaced it without charge – so naturally I was reluctant to bother him again. This is a great whistle, and I’m REALLY pleased with both the quality and the service I’ve gotten!

Yeah, my Burkes do it. That reminds me of a lyric “Burkes do it, bees do it…” Now what was that song?

I have an Overton Low D that does it a bit too.

Nothing to worry about, and it gives you that moist lipped look that is so attractive to the opposite sex. :stuck_out_tongue:
