Hi Guys, I have come into possession of a Moeck 319 Sopranino flute, which from the included pamphlet suggests it dates to 2003. I am not a musician so- am clueless about this flute! Reading online I can see it was made in several different wood types, it looks either Maple or Castello Boxwood? There doesn’t seem to be any indication on the box etc on what type it could be. Can any of you tell from the photos if it is boxwood or maple? Thank you in advance!
I’m going to say Castelo Boxwood. Darkened a bit with age perhaps, since it is more yellow when fresh cut.
Castello Boxwood is common for Moeck, and has that golden-yellow color. Maple is much whiter, unless it is stained - which would be rather brown.
I would suspect your recorder is made from pear wood…
I believe plunk111 has it. I went looking for this Moeck recorder and there are more wood options, and pear looks like a match. The original photos look nothing like maple and somewhat like darkened Castelo boxwood, but spot on for pear. Here is a pic of a pear version.
As others have suggested, pearwood seems the most likely candidate, but you could send a pic to Moeck for their evaluation.
Also, Eric Hass at Von Huene Workshop in MA is very knowledgeable about such things. Friedrich von Huene designed Moeck’s Rottenburgh line of recorders.
