Mo Bhuachillin Donn (The Brown-haired Boy)

The Celtic Nots (www.celticnots.com) do a lovely tune that they have titled “Mo Bhuachillin Donn”. However, when I search on that title, its variations, and the English translations, I can’t find any sheet music that resembles what the Nots play. Has anyone heard this tune, and can you tell me what it is?

(I would not be surprised if the tune is not “Mo Bhuachillin Donn”. The Celtic Nots do another great tune that they call “Eamonn’s Reel” that is actually “The Chicago Reel”.)

I don’t know that one. I do have the music for a tune called “An Buachaillin Ban” (which I believe would be “The Fair-haired Boy”)…could they be the same tune? The one I have is from “Traditional Slow Airs of Ireland.” The opening notes are:

e f# g f# e f# b a f# e e f# e d

Is that it?

Maybe you could develop a new version of this based on a modern song:

Brown haired boy meets Brown eyed girl. Sha-la, la la, etc…

Redwolf,

That might be it. Do you by chance have the sheet music?

Considering the rescent activity on CF, the first time I read the subject I saw:

No Bellyaching Don!

 :boggle:

I do, but it’s in a book, and therefore copyrighted. The tune itself is, I’m sure, in the public domain. Have you tried doing a search on the spelling I gave? Try that, and if it doesn’t turn up, PM me and I’ll see what I can do.

Redwolf

Try this:

JC’s Tunefinder turned up 7 matches to the spelling I gave. Here’s a link:

http://trillian.mit.edu/~jc/cgi/abc/findtune?P=An+Buachaillin+Ban&F1=find+(thin)&L=100

These are ABC files, but you can convert them to sheet music here:

http://www.concertina.net/tunes_convert.html

Try that, and see if it’s what you’re looking for. You may want to have a listen to the ABC files first, to see if that’s really the tune you want…if I remember correctly, clicking on them will give you the option of listening to a midi file.

Redwolf

Hmmm…I just listened to these, and they’re not the same tune I have. Well, as before, if this doesn’t work, PM me.

Redwolf

I pulled up your posting from JC’s sight and I noticed that it isn’t just an ABC sight any more. I tried the midi on the tune in A and was not impressed but I tried out the Em tune on my whistle and you know when a tune just rolls right off your fingers, like it just jumps off the page and starts poping out of your whistle? It was like that. This tune is going right in to my stuff. I’m going to try it on my pipes too.

And now Nano says: “Another jig BL?”

I know–Self, learn more reels!!

BL

The one on JC’s Tunefinder is a nice tune, but it’s not the one I was referring to, which is a slow air. One of those cases of more than one tune with the same name, I guess.

You may be talking about An Caisideach Ban which is a Sean Nos. It is cut #12 on Darach o Cathain’s CD’s. The notes you gave above match up. Try a search with that name and see what comes up.

Well, this is interesting.

I went to Borders yesterday to buy some new CDs and found one by Karan Casey (vocalist for Solas) which, among many other terrific songs, features “An Buachaillin Ban”…the sean nos song I’m familiar with, not the jig. It’s a tremendously powerful, sorrowful air when sung…especially by someone of Casey’s ability.

Anyway, it does appear to be a public domain tune, so if you still want the notation, drop me a private message and I’ll note it down and scan it in.
