Missippi River Celtic Fest

I just received a notice announcing
the above fest, which will be held here
in St. Louis April 12-14. Bryan Crow,
Grey Larson, and Larry Nugent will be
teaching whistle. John Skelton flute.
It’s 65 dollars for as many workshops
as you can get to on Sat, and this includes
the concert in the evening.

I’ve gone to this twice before and
benefitted considerably from the whistle
teaching. The website is http://www.tionol.org

Grey Larson is a great teacher, I took a lesson with him in Denver last summer and he helped me alot

Me too.

I’m planning on going.

I’m toying with the idea of going…Has anybody even had Larry Nugent (advanced whistle) or Kevin Burke (intermediate/advanced fiddle) for a teacher? I don’t know if I would do fiddle or whistle…If I did fiddle, I know I would be in the intermediate/advanced class (as opposed to beginner) but in the whistle area I don’t know if I would (or should) be placed in the intermediate or advanced category. If the teacher is good in both, then I’ll probably learn something, no matter which class I’m in. So John and Jim, I might see you there!

Brent

I’m thinking similar thoughts.
I don’t know whether I’m intermediate
or advanced on the whistle. But I do
think Grey Larsen is a phenomenal
teacher–he has a practical theory about
ornamentation and what it’s doing
which I know was of real value to me.
With any luck maybe
I can take both whistle workshops.

Hey, Kardshark! How’s it going?

Are you going to see the Ladies up in Arkansas City, KS on March 8? It will be a 4-hour trip for me, but should only take you about 1 hour (or less if you drive like Mark Martin). I’ll be getting my tickets (third row) soon if snail-mail can keep up! You’ll have to meet them after the show, too! They are SOOOOO nice!

Brassblower,

Did you get to hear CTL when they were in Conway, AR recently? I made the trip over to hear them and really enjoyed it.

Adding to the experience was the fact that they performed on the campus of Central Arkansas U. which (if I’m not mistaken) is the alma mater of the Undisputed!

Thanks for mentioning the performance on Mar 8th. I wasn’t aware of it.

Oh yes, about the workshops in St. Louis.

I attended the intermediate workshop with Grey Larson in St. Louis last year and got a lot out of it. I agree he is an excellent teacher.

I had been playing (or trying to) for less than six months then so I wasn’t sure whether I should sign up for beginner or intermediate. Intermediate turned out to be about right – apparently if you know the fingerings and can struggle through a few tunes you are intermediate. If I am able to go again this year (still not sure), I will try the advanced class.

I WAS THERE, JAYMITCH!!!   Awesome show, wasn’t it?

I didn’t know that UCA was the Undisputed’s Alma Mater!

If you need a phone number for March 8 CTL tickets, it is at Cowley College, and the number is 620-441-5277. I look forward to seeing Joanie again (of course, Dee’s pretty good on the whistle, too)! Being a guitarist as well, I’m also looking forward to seeing Mary C. again!

I need to order Mrs. BB and myself some C&F t-shirts to wear. Maybe then we can all wear them and track each other down for a little pre-concert conversation on our favorite subject (and maybe a little session)!

Awesome it was. I’ll talk to the better half tonight and see what we can work out for Mar 8th.

As for the C&F Tee shirt, do they come in XXL Portly Short?

BB,
It says they’re going to be in Winfield, KS on the 8th…I had seen that before, but it said they would be performing with the symphony. I don’t know if that means the symphony will adjust and play Irish music, or if CTL will adjust and play Clasical music. Anyways, if they’re playing Irish, then I could probably talk my dad into taking me…We go to Winfield every year for a festival (you should go next year!) and its about a two hour drive. That would be awesome to meet them! Unfortunately, I don’t think I would be very becoming with my jaw touching the ground after the concert! I’ll email you if I can talk my Dad into going, but first I need your email. If you don’t want to post it here, you can just send my an email (its in my profile).

Jay,
I’m looking forward to the 16th!!! Hopefully we’ll see each other there. How about we both die our hair green with blue polka dots and then we’ll be able to find each other, ok? :stuck_out_tongue:

Brent

It’s supposed to be with the Winfield Symphony, but the concert itself is supposed to be at the Robert Brown Theater at Cowley College, which is in Arkansas City.

And don’t worry about looking unbecoming with your jaw hanging down when you meet them! They will put you at ease very quickly!

We plan on getting there the day before the show. There will be an associated music workshop, which I will try to attend.

BTW, my e-mail address is twisterhead60@hotmail.com (I’m the one who sent that one out about being annoying!)

Slan,
BB

My wife and I will be there. Don’t know about the green hair, etc., though. We always get the same seats, though. Right side, a couple of seats in from the aisle, three or four rows up for the lowest section. Seems like it’s row Q, but that might not be right. Look for an old, fat, bearded, (generally disreputable and scary-looking) guy with a surprisingly attractive wife.

Looks like we and maybe BrassBlower could cross paths two or three times in the near future. I’m looking forward to it.

I imagine the way the CTL show is going to work is that the symphony will probably play a few pieces first, then they will play a few pieces together, then the rest of the show will be CTL.

A question was asked earlier to which
I also would like to know the answer:
Anybody studied with Larry Nugent?
Opinions? Reviews? Thanks.

Jay,
Is it the right side if you’re looking out from the stage onto the audience, or the right side if you’re walking in through the doors?

BB,
Are you going to the concert in Tulsa on the 16th?

Brent

Who’s coming to Tulsa on the 16th? Is that February 16th?

Celtic Fiddle Festival (Kevin Burke, Johnny Cunningham and Christian Lemaitre) will be at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center Feb 15 & 16. No whistles, but it should be great fiddling.

And for Brent, that’s right as you face the stage, and it’s actually row “J” (I knew that!).
