I thought this was a satire, but there it is on the CNN front page.
I guess networks are speculating on who will become the next big Laci Petersen/Chandra Levy story, and invested heavily in this story in case it might be it. Hence they already had a reporter at the scene, and people queued up to analyze what didn’t happen but could have.

Bizarre behavior. I get the running away to New Mexico part, but why not just call in and say “I’m freaking out, I’m going to be away for a while…” instead of fabricating a ridiculous story.
There’s probably a lot going on that we’re not aware of. I suspect there’s some mental illness there that may just now be coming out.
Remember that college student a few years back who faked her own kidnapping? This sounds like a very similar scenario.
