I heard confirmation this week that John Skelton will be teaching the advanced flute class at this year’s Milwaukee Irish Fest Summer School from August 11 to 15.
I’ll post more about the flute classes as I hear confirmations.
Full flute staff:
Intermediate flue: Christine Dowling
Advanced flute: John Skelton
John is a riot, not to mention a great player and fine teacher - don’t hesitate to go if you’re able. You’ll learn a ton and you’ll get a killer ab workout from all the laughing. Great bang for the buck really as you’ll improve your playing and work on your six-pack at the same time.
I’d highly recommend the Milwaukee Summer School. I attended for the first time last year and learned some great tunes, got some great stylistic pointers, and had a blast at the nightly sessions, where I met some great people, including our own Dr. Funkenstein. The festival is great, too, of course. Plus, Milwaukee is a nice town–good restaurants, sites to see, etc. Rest up beforehand! I can’t remember the tuition off-hand, but it was quite reasonable, and teachers are sometimes available for private lessons, as well. If I remember right, classes are an hour or an hour-and-a-half each day Monday through Thursday. The festival starts Friday. Sadly, I’m not likely to make it back this year, but hopefully next year.
I think the pricing and full details from the brochure will be released in the next couple of weeks. Tintin is correct, classes last year were 1.5 hours/day, Monday through Thursday before the festival weekend. Word on the street is that sessions will be at the new Trinity Three Irish Pubs which is a large place (3 pubs combined and connected into one)–lots of room for various sessions! Should be a good week (yet again).
Tintin, I hope you can make it back this year! Are you going to be at La Crosse the week before?
The preliminary schedule has the intermediate/advanced flute classes happening at the same time, so it looks to be one or the other. Maybe a good compromise would be to take the intermediate class but see if you can get a private lesson from John Skelton sometime during the week?
Of course there are no beginner flute classes.
It takes months to get a consistent sound.
Imagine a class full of people who really
are beginners.
So intermediate is often beginners (people who can at least
play the thing) and advanced is intermediate.
I’ve taken a masters class once! It didn’t so much matter.
People often teach what they want regardless of
‘level.’

Enroll NOW in Irish Fest Summer School
Friday, July 18th is the last day for mail-in registration for the Irish Fest Summer School. Take a moment to look at the wealth of classes—for adults, children, and families—that we offer in Irish culture, language, music, and dance. Teachers from Ireland this year include lecturer Seamus MacPhilib of the Museum of Country life, basketmaker Vincent McCarron from the Aran Islands, knitter Rosaleen Hegarty from Donegal, and art historian Frances Sweeney from Omagh. Other Irish favorites include Harry Bradshaw and Ray Mac Manais. Dr. Tim Campbell, director of the Saint. Patrick Centre in Downpatrick, will offer special workshops for children ages 6-10 to create a pageant on the life of St. Patrick, which will be shown on the Children’s Stage at Irish Fest.
The Summer School runs from Monday, August 10 through Friday, August 15. There are some special events in the evenings that are free and open to the public. If you cannot take an entire week of classes, take a look at our Friday morning sampler.
Full information on classes, instructors, and registration is available at > www.irishfest.com
