I do! but actually you’re a year off. Mine is a '35 chevy master 4-door. You’re not likely to see in down in the Bay Area due to gases prices though.
Hi Jack!
What are you doing in this neck of the woods?
Does this mean you are starting to like the pipes?

Friend, some of your folding money has come unstowed.
Wow!! What can I say. I’m still speachless from the concert on Saturday night. Mikie is a great guy and an outstanding musician. His afternoon class definitely put a perspective on things. I didn’t think the Kesh Jig could be so darn difficult. A big thanks to Gabe for hosting the event. Another big thanks to the SoCal guys for putting it together, I’ll definitely be down for the one in June. And finally a big thanks to Mikie for being a great teacher and an inspiring piper. I know what I wanna be when I grow up now
. To those who couldn’t make this one, DEFINITELY put an effort into coming to the one in June. I’ll try to put up some video clips of the man in action soon.
-Mike
You know, I’df put it, that its just youthful entuidiasm that Mike has, but…really, it was a great concert and all is true; and I really want to suffer with the rest of them learning ( from what I understand) was how to back stitch a bunch. Be there in JUNE
I checked Mikie’s site; when does his CD come out?- hope its not as long a wait as David Power’s
He’s gonna have a few copies with him on his return from New Zealand. Yet another reason to be there in June. ![]()
Eskin, just listened to the clip. Is there another instrument playing with the UPs? The drones sound more like a hurdy-gurdy than UPs. What’s up with that?
Thx,
djm
I think he is playing without the bass drone.
Mukade
Pretty interesting, huh? His bass drone doesn’t play the same note as the other two (set is in C#), it plays an F#, a fourth above C#, which makes for some really thick and lovely harmonies with the regs. As he explained it to me, it just happened one day, he was trying to tune up the bass drone and it kept jumping up in pitch, when he checked it, it was a F#, so he decided to keep it. Gives it a rather medieval quality, I think. He’ll use the baritone and tenor drones (unison C#) when he doesn’t want the harmony drone, then kick in the bass when he wants the thick harmonies.
That was the most incredible playing I have ever seen. You really want to see Mikie play. Listening is great, but seeing is better. His regulator playing is quite amazing.
And, as Mike pointed out Mikie is a really great guy.
Thanks for the explanation. Many (but not all) bass drones will do this. Try taking the foot off your bass drone (i.e. the end with the trumpet/hockey puck/whatever) and see if you can adjust the pressure a bit to get it to sound G on a D set.

Here’s a short snippet of video from the SCUPC concert showing Mikie’s incredible regulator work:
(sorry, had to pull the URL at the service provider’s request)
Cheers,
Michael
Speaking of Mikie’s return engagement, Mikie Smyth, part Deux will be the weekend of June 24-26; same general m.o., but the venue is shifting to chéz No E in Los Angeles (near LAX). There will be a bit of a party Friday night, workshops on Saturday, followed by a house concert. Space is limited, so please e-mail me if you plan on attending (ldunn@telcoproductions.com).

Service Unavailable on my screen ![]()
Yeah… our ISP doesn’t allow MP3’s and large media files for download and has now shut down the site.
Can anyone out there help us and donate space?
Thanks,
Patrick.
Yep, I had to pull all the files off the site due to our service provider’s persnickity rules… ![]()
As Pat mentioned, if anyone has a recommendation for a reasonably priced hosting service where the SoCal club can get a few hundred megabytes of storage that allows .mp3 and .wmv files to be hosted, please let me or Pat know.
Thanks,
Michael
I use http://www.page-zone.com
Now, I can donate some space (up to 1 GB at the current moment) but large files such as these could still push me to bandwidth limits. I need to keep it under, say 10 GB of downloading per month. It’s a reseller plan, so I can set the limits, but once you exceed them…you’re cut off. Also, best if you get a domain name for $6 so you can control uploads, and you’d have the DNS point to my space (takes up to 72 hours to propogate).

We’ve been reveiving some great suggestions for hosting. Thanks one and all for that! Hopefully we’ll get this sorted out soon.
Patrick.
I agree 100%. I’m not generally a fan of regulators, as IMHO most pipers over-do the regs, but MS’s style of playing the regulators is very convincing. Nice lively chanter too. Like what he’s done with the drones too.
