I’m sure all techies out there heard about this news. This is quite something for people like me who ‘grew up’ with Yahoo! pioneering the internet. Who would have thought such a thing possible only 2-3 years ago. But Google came like a storm and changed the whole game for most online companies.
I personally think it’s not going to bother Google at all, and even better, it’s going to slow down Microsoft. I would say the takeover will eventually be accepted by the feds, and I’m sure Yahoo!'s shareholders will accept, at the end, this ‘unsolicited’ takeover, but let’s see in 2-3 years from now if it was a good move. I think it will make matters worse for Microsoft, and will allow Google to focus on ‘one main ennemy’ instead of two. This move might also attract some more antitrust lawsuits again Microsoft.
Microsoft, MSN and Yahoo! are all huge brands. What do you call it to avoid wasting a good brand?
MSN Yahoo! ???
I’m a pro search engine optimiser. I like Google and, to be honest, as I have cracked what ranks sites well on Google, I don’t want their dominance to be threatened. Plus, I just think big G is still the best engine.
I agree I try to optimize for Google only. I wonder if Microsoft would keep both Yahoo!'s and their own engine separate, or fusion and use the same.
But anyway Google has currently the biggest brain power on the planet, and I get the feeling, if the takeover goes through, some of Yahoo’s most skilled employees will want to join Google.
This Yahoo investor is just waiting for the offer! My dad and I bought Netscape when it offered the IPO and held on for a long time. When Google came out, we sold Netscape/AOL and bought Google. Bin Smiling ever since.
Well, I’m not so sure this offer is that great for Yahoo’s investors, beside the ones that invested in it no more than a few months ago. Yahoo used to be much more valued, and converting your Yahoo share into Microsoft’s means that you now own stock that has not progressed much (actually lost value) in the past few years.
Buying Netscape was a nice move, it must have multiplied by almost 7-8 before it got bought by AOL? AOL lost lot of value even before Google went public, you still managed quite well? You guys were brave to invest in Google, the stock was so high, I had the feeling Google’s price was a bit of another bubble that could burst. It hasnt happened so far, and shows no sign of happening. Good one
I think the purchase of YaHoo is less than brilliant on the part of Microsoft, that is, the money could be far better spent on getting at least two of their proprietary systems to work right, funky e-mail and funky browser.
We aren’t that deep in Yahoo holdings, it was a hedge bet that did pay somewhat well then, we’re just holding what we have left of Yahoo to see what will happen and then dump it. I don’t think personally that Microsoft buying Yahoo will pay off for them. Google has Microsoft in its sights and Microsoft is feeling squeamish.
Just keep in mind here, when talking about MS and Google, BOTH companies are scary. Don’t think that MS is the big scary company when compared to Google, in fact, in most cases there, MS would be right in calling foul.
Yeah, I use Google, but I also know that they have built quite a database on all it’s “customers” and they don’t like giving that information away…it’s not to protect your privacy, it’s because that information is actually a decent part of their worth.
MS buying Yahoo is really a joke though. It’s sort of like waking up with a stranger you met in a bar the night before. Last night, they looked like a supermodel. This morning…troll.
