i have recently discovered michael mcgoldrick and i can’t stop listening to the song “Ridee” does anyone know what he is playing on that track? he is mostly a flautist i thought. on this track it sounds like flute but at other times a whistle.

yep, he plays the flute. as well as the whistle & pipes. i’ve never heard his albums, only on lúnasa’s ‘otherworld’ (which i can’t tell who’s who), and on capercaillie’s ‘nádurra’.

It’s an A whistle - either an Overton or an Overton knock-off, I’d wager. Towards the end it does sound more flutey, but that’s just where he’s going up into the higher reaches of the whistle’s range.

I agree! what an excellent tune. It certainly sounds like a whistle and the tune plays nicely on a D whistle, well it would if I could play it  Maybe it’s a low D?? All I do know is that the tune starts on F#

I saw him play some time ago, he played with a box player (Tim Edey) who started the set with the Independence hornpipe at a million miles an hour. Mike launched into the whistle part doing all sorts of amazing stuff and he hadn’t even warmed up! Needless to say the whole evening was an ear opener and one I won’t forget.

Dave.
Edit. StevieJ answered the question while I was writing (I thought I would get away from editing once in my life)
