"Mestertyven"?

I’m working through my Willowflute Tutor book, Spela sälgflöjt by Jean-Pierre Yvert.
It has tunes like Polska från Rättvik, Polska från Dalarna, and Långdans.

Those I can manage - the titles, I mean (actually, I can play some of them).

But Mestertyven Arve Brakars halling has begun to prey on my mind. M Yvert has a parallel English text with his Danish (I think - I’m not sure), but does not translate the title. A halling is a particular type of tune. This one is taken from Mats Berglund’s latest CD (it says).

Can anyone enlighten me as to what “Mestertyven” means?

..

“halling” means hello. You’re on your own after that.

Sorry, I don’t have definition for you, but Rättvik and Dalarna (from your other titles) are in Sweden. Maybe try looking it up in Swedish?

IMDB gives this clue:
Balladen om mestertyven Ole Høiland (1970)
… aka Ballad of the Masterthief Ole Hoiland (International: English title)

So,I’d guess “masterthief” is the correct guess.

Yes, I had come across Mestertyven Ole Høiland, and Mestertyven McCoy, as well. I didn’t feel confident of the assumption.

(I did try Babelfish and a few translation sites: Swedish, Norwegian, Danish & Icelandic to English. None of them could handle “mestertyven”.)

But thank you. That will do nicely.

When in doubt about Danish, ask a Dane. I did this on the UP forum and got the following response:

QED. Thanks again.
