I will play “Taps” at sunset tonight in honour of them all.

I will play ‘‘Going home’’.

They have gone away, into the dark lands,
And there they lifted high our flag–
They are gone, but the flag remains
And the piper salutes the coffin,
The sad pride of cold rain and memories.

The flag still flies, though its colors are dimmed
And age has frayed the edges.
Somewhere a lonely old soldier
Lifts his gun and staggers on
In someone’s memory whose life he saved.

The flag still flies, and the dream it stands for
Still burns within the memory.
Somewhere a lonely old soldier
Hears a tale of America the torturer,
And in the shadow of pre-emptive war

He hangs his hoary head in shame

But someone has to stand the post
So the weary ghost somewhere lifts his gun,
Straightens his shoulders, and lifts his head.

In his old eyes there is a gleam, and a promise:
The flag still flies: we may all still get to go home.
