I decided to try out the Melody Assistant program (Myriad) and downloaded it from the website. Now I have a 4.5MB binary file and not the foggiest idea how to open or install the thing. Can anyone tell me what I did or am doing wrong?
I have that program! You should just be able to doubleclick on the file from your Windows Explorer or go to Start>Run and browse to the location of your exe file. Should self-install. For a very inexpensive program, I’ve found it to be pretty useful.
When I do either, Windows attempts to open it as a graphic.
OK, if it does have a self-install as you mention, I’ll assume a problem on the download and get it again. Thanks.
On their site, there is a link to a Myriad Download Wizard. You might give that a try. I’ve found some programs don’t like to download and install correctly unless you go through the provider’s little wizard. I don’t recall having to do this, but it’s probably worth a try to prevent more frustration–especially if you don’t have a highspeed connection!

That’s exactly what it took. The first file - the one that came through as a huge binary, was actually corrupted in the file transfer process. I used their download wizard and everything came through fine. The program looks interesting, but it really isn’t intuitive to a non-musician. I’m still messing with it. If I can figure it out, I’ll probably go ahead and register, but for an old command-line type like me that totally graphical interface is proving more than a little obscure.
