McGee R&R keyless for sale

A rather bad turn of events leads me to offer up my McGee flute for sale.

It’s McGee’s “Rudall and Rose Perfected” keyless model in blackwood, with moderately large toneholes, the “rounded rectangle” embouchure cut, and Terry’s latest tuning slide innovation (pretty nifty idea, really). It has the traditional-look head, not the Boehm-like head he also makes. The flute is loud, easy to play, and has a booming low end and bright high end. It’s in perfect condition, having been played and oiled regularly for several years now. The only change I made is to replace the cork lapping on the footjoint tenon with thread lapping, to tighten the fit (I’m finding I prefer thread, for its adjustability). I’ll throw in a hard case I purchased for the flute (actually, a rugged plastic pistol case with foam inserts, in which the flute fits perfectly, as used by Dave Copley for his flutes).

I got this flute from another generous Chiffer almost exactly a year ago, and will be sorry to see it go. I trust it will go to a good home, though, if it goes to someone here. Contact me via PM with any questions or for details.

Asking price: $1100 including hardcase – I’ll pay shipping in the continental U.S., and throw in a few goodies (cleaning stick/swab, etc.) as well. May have to make different arrangements for overseas buyers, depending on shipping cost.

And hey, if you live in the San Francisco area and are looking for a really nice, almost-brand-new sea kayak, I’m your man! May even have a one-year old Hybrid Civic to offer ya, too! (Oy.)

(Don’t worry, I’m keeping my polymer flute and a couple bamboos – Olwell, Cox – to play on until I can justify the purchase of a fine wooden instrument again. “It’s only stuff,” as I keep trying to tell myself.)

Yes - that flute used to be mine. Terry delivered it when he came to the States, I sold it because I play the Keyed McGee most of the time, and the Pratten model is easier for me, but like a true McGee, it plays very easy, and has a big clear sound.
Aaron is a great guy as well.

Naw, just send me a check for the amount you think the flute may be worth, and if you’re right, I’ll send you the flute. If you’re wrong, I’ll keep the check and you can chalk it up as a learning experience . . .

Yeah, I forgot to mention the asking price, so I’ll go edit my previous post now; thanks for the reminder. (Also forgot to mention the timber type – blackwood – as another person reminded me via PM. I’m addled-minded lately . . .)

Thanks, too, Eilam (also a great guy, our Eilam). Things will work out in time, I’m sure; just having one of those rough stretches that come along once in a while. Eilam’s right about the flute’s tone, and ease of play. I’ll miss it, but will get a new one as soon as I can. Maybe Eilam will sell me his Pratten by then. (Or I can sneak down to Ojai when he’s not looking . . .) :smiling_imp:

Hmm, is this a keyless flute, I assume it is going by the price or?

Man, you guys are such sticklers for accurate information. Sheesh.

I guess working under stress doesn’t do great things for my accuracy in description; yes, it’s a keyless flute, as I’ve now edited into the first post. Anything else I missed? :blush:

I’m sorry to hear about the bad turn of events. I hope things pick up for you soon. Unfortunately, cash has dried up for me lately, or I’d be interested myself since I don’t own a quality keyless. But, then again, if cash hadn’t dried up I might have landed the Copley, Murray or Olwell that turned up here recently. Not that I have anything to complain about with a keyed Lehart. (Thanks Terry.)

What a joke had the McGee returned to within a couple of hours drive of its place of manufacture.

The flute’s been sold, to a very fine Boehm player who’s likely to turn into a very fine IrTrad player, based on what I heard and on her enthusiasm for the music. I haven’t had someone taking notes while I talk since my day in upper management – and before that, since TA’ing in grad school – and the notetakers then never looked so earnest!
