I seem to remember discussion about Matt Molloy’s Eb flute .I have just asked him and he says that for his early recordings he used his Hawkes Excelsior Eb flute , but for later recordings Rudall & Rose concert flutes in D .If I have got any of this wrong he can correct it himself as I have suggested that he inspects the site himself .So stand to attention !
I believe it was me who raised the question in the first place. Specifically, I was wondering about what flute he was playing when he did a surprise guest appearance with Tommy Peoples at Nanny O’Brien’s pub in Washington DC last July. They were playing in Eb that night. Was it an Eb flute he was playing, or a corps de rechange on his D flute?
I’ve heard it said that he has keyless Eb and C bodies for his D flute. I’m sure someone with more information will confirm or deny.
I would hazard a guess that Matt has a few flutes in Eb. I’m pretty sure he plays an Orwell Eb as well. I was backstage when Patrick introduced himself to Matt years ago at a Chieftans concert in Chapel Hill. (Boy do I wish I’d put in an order then!) It was just before Patrick’s flutes started to take off and he had several for Matt to try out. I could be wrong but I believe Matt ordered an Eb from him also.
