I have heard this woman play. She is fantastic. Does anyone know of any recordings with her playing on it?

I found references to other CDs, Wolvy, but couldn’t enter the websites. She also played (or plays) in the following groups: Double Treble, Out of the Rain, The Friontmen, Heart of the Roll.

I play mandolin myself so I’d be keen to hear her in a sympathetic context.

Yes, I’ve heard her live in sessions. There is just something magic about the way she makes her mando lock in with the fiddles and other melody instruments. There is a bit of a swing in there too. I don’t think that CD you referred me to does her playing that much justice, being a studio recording and (I suspect) mostly done with overdubs.

I never thought the mando was a very good IRTRAD instrument until I heard her play it. Now I am a believer.

I assume you have heard Tim O’Brien’s recordings “The Crossing” and “Two Journeys”. Well… as good as Tim’s playing is, he doesn’t even come close to what Marla does with her mando. (IMHO)

Yep, I know Tim’s playing. He occupies an interesting space between true American mountain music and Irish music, not quite one or the other. I like his playing a lot, even when I prefer the original recordings of the songs and tunes he covers. There are plenty of superb mando players in country and bluegrass.

As far as I can tell, Marla hasn’t made a CD featuring her mandolin playing, at least not recently.
