Marine whistler

I saw a pic (big, 8"x12") in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch this morning of a Marine playing a whistle while riding in an AAV.

The pic may be AP, but this specific pic was attributed to a Post journalist.

Thought some of you might find it interesting…

I would like to see the picture! If you can find it, post it!

If not, can you scan it?

Kim

Here is how you can see it.

Go here:

http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/graphlib.nsf/ByFilename/frontpage.pdf/$file/frontpage.pdf

This will bring up a .pfd image of the front page of today’s paper. Scroll down to the bottom to find the whistler picture. Using Adobe Acrobat’s zoom function, you can enlarge it. It gets a bit grainy, but it looks like Generation to me.

(This will probably only work today, 4/4/03. I assume the image will be replaced daily with the current front page.)

I think we need to add a new Unsolved Whistle Mystery: WHO IS THE WHISTLING MARINE??

Perhaps Dale could arrange to strike a special Chiff & Fipple Medal for Meritorious Whistling Under Combat Conditions to be presented to him on his return.

If anyone finds a better picture, post it…this one won’t last.

K

I cut this picture out of the paper. You get the gist of it. His name is posted in the caption. I don’t recall the name but I think he’s 27 years old. I’ll post it when I get back to work on Monday.

Hopkins

the marines name is Tood Gehrke and he is 27. i would post the picture but i don’t know how to post it on the message board after getting it on the computer. if anyone knows if it can be done that’d be good.

yup

now i’m just talking to myself cause i’m bored and no one is saying anything. i made a website for you people now thank me… just kidding

looks like a waltons guinees model to me anybody else have a guess.

Thanks for posting the pic, DK.

Yep, Walton’s Guinness Black Wee Beastie. Battered round the end, just like mine that lives all its life in my holdall.

Definitely deserves a medal for OUSTANDING SERVICES TO WHISTLING. 6-holers should be free-issue to all combatants.

Thank you so much for your efforts! I’ve already saved the picture and emailed it to everyone I can think of!

The Geocities one didn’t show up for me, so here it is again…

Lance Cpl Todd Gehrke, 27, entertains fellow Marines with his tin whistle as they ride in an amphibious assault vehicle.

Do you notice something??? Look at the mouthpiece! He has a piece of cord or something tied around it. Do you think he actually has this whistle tied to his person??!!!

God bless him! He doesn’t want to loose his whistle.

Kim

Hmmmm. with that decorative cord tied around it, it looks an awful lot like a Ressikan Flute!

Is anybody that posted about this Marine still an active member. I am that Whistling Marine and I didn’t even realize that I was a celebrity! Let me know if there is anybody still active.

BTW I bought the Tin Whistle in Ireland and it was the Walton’s Guinness Black Wee Beastie. Unfortunately it didn’t make it back in one piece. Yes there was a piece of 550 cord tied around it. Dual purpose…I made it my own with it’s uniqeness and I sure didn’t want to drop it! Thanks for the interest!

(Lance Corporal) Todd Gehrke

Hi Todd, welcome.

How funny, your finding this after all this time. I think only Blackhawk is still active here. If you have a link to a copy of the original photo you can post, that might be fun. I can find only a Google thumbnail online.

Hope you’re still whistling. If so, please feel free to join us. Cheers!

Blackhawk frequents on face book now.
His last post here was around November 2010. http://forums.chiffandfipple.com/search.php?author_id=1030&sr=posts

Welcome Whistling_Marine I’m glad you returned safely.
How about some whistle stories?

not going well…
