would anyone recognise this maker’s mark? (from an 8 key instrument, probably German/Austrian, probably about 100 years old, the words beneath the image read ‘TRADE MARK’ in English).
There is also an old repair/service receipt headed ‘Receipt for repairs to Hernals Flute O/F’ (but I don’t know why)
Hi Mark,
Sorry, couldn’t find any records of that maker’s mark, or the name in Langwill’s catalog. Maybe it was Hernal that owned the flute, and had it repaired?
Maybe it would be more helpful if you posted a photo of the whole flute.
I’ve seen several Boehm flutes with the name “Hernal” or “Hernals” ( I can’t remember clearly)
They were made in Japan , and were from the 1970’s.
I suspect that the reciept isn’t related to the eight keyed flute.
Now you see, that’s exactly my puzzle. You’re absolutely right that Hernals is a brand of metal Boehm flute sold out of Japan (and if you Google ‘Hernals flute’ that’s exactly what you get). Hernals is/was also a district of Vienna by the way.
Now the receipt (about 15 years ago) definitely says “simple system ‘Baroque’ type flute” under the heading and describes repairs to the foot joint, corking and tuning the holes a bit. There is also a note suggesting the instrument might once have been high pitched and that the scale might still be a bit ‘stretched’ at A=440 etc, so unless they were having a weird day I’m pretty convinced.
