Finished another aluminium D this pm. I made it with a longer beak than the last one and it has achieved the effect I wanted - more back pressure. Don’t know if it was luck, but it worked, and the tone is lovely. I spent all Saturday tuning it so it’s spot on there, and I’m delighted. The top is plastic instead of metal so less spit problems! Pics show (I hope) comparison of the two beaks and slightly different sizing and hole configuration. I know there are scratchy marks but I only have a hacksaw, file and sandpaper so far - and very sore arms! I also know the blade appears crooked but the tone is so good I’m reluctant to tidy it up!
Thanks again. I’ll try that next time. You don’t want to know the trouble I had getting THREE pictures on here at all! The middle one kept disappearing.
Very nice Dancer, re the crooked blade, if it aint broke, don’t fix it!! It’s the sound that’s important. I make my windways around the 25mm (1 inch) long and also taper them down so that you get a kind of venturi effect. This seems to increase the backpressure and reduce breathiness, a trick I picked up off Guido’s site.
All the best, and keep on whistling,
Ian
I haven’t “borrowed” my old ladies’ sticks yet but the time will come . . . They insist on trying to trip me up or hit me with them while I’m working, so they have been warned! I should think they would make good low Ds - the sticks, not the old ladies -and I want to make one of those after I’ve made a metal Bb, the next project.
