M&E Keyed Rudall Rose has arrived...now with pictures!

My new 6-keyed Rudall Rose M&E Polymer flute is here.

It only took 8 days to fly from Ireland to Idaho! That’s got to be some kind of record.

I take back everything bad I ever said about the Postal Service.

Description:

It is heavier than the Dixon Polymer. The holes are of the Rudall Rose variety and therefore smallish, very like the Dixon. I think the tone is somewhat rounder and a litte more focused than the Dixon and the volume may be a little better. I wish I had my Dixon back for a minute so I could verify the volume question.

The key work is well-done. Michael has upgraded the quality of his keys. They are very nice. The tuning slide is really well done also. The thing seems extra-ordinarily sturdy.

The sound is not as complex as the my wooden Doyle or my Bamboo Olwells but is really very satisfying…not less-nice just different. It is fine through 2+ octaves. The embouchre requires a hair more focus than my other flutes but not enough to fuss about.

I cranked out some really fun Blues on the thing last night. The keys are very cool to have…If I could just remember which ones are which!

If somebody wants to host a picture I’ll post one. I don’t have a way to do it.

Now here’s the best part; I played the thing for hours and hours right out of the mail box. No breaking in, no hand ringing or fussing, just music. When I was done I just tossed it on top of the bookcase.

I figure I’ll get an extra 10 minutes a day of practice time because I don’t have to put it together, take it apart, swab it out, oil it or apologise to it. Let’s see, over a year that’s 60 hours. Also, it’s great for quickies and I can play outside and still sleep at night.

Fuss-free music. You gotta love it!

Doc - If you want to email me some pictures, I can host them on gaelic crossings.

Oh, and if you have ever played a Seery, how would you compare it to that?

Aodhan

Well, if you don’t want to pay for a premature pad job, you’re still going to have to swab it out after playing. Or at least buy a pad saver and put that in there to absorb the moisture…

Loren

Doc–if you wouldn’t mind sending me a pic, with your permission I’d love to add it to the page on my site about the M&E Rudall & Rose flutes.

Thanks,

Ok Loren you kill-joy. I’ll swab it out occasionally. But I’m betting with my Idaho-desert humidity (or lack thereof) it won’t be much of an issue.

Aodhan,

I’ve never tried a Seery..sorry.

I do swab my M&E 6-key out pretty regularly and I do recommend doing that.

That said, the pads appear to be waterproof synthetic pads and I believe they are impervious to moisture.

I have never actually asked Michael about this, though, and always figured it was better to err on the side of safety.

Best,

Hey Doc, just out of curiosity: What was the final price on your new axe - cost of the flute plus shipping = ???

Loren

Flute…$325
Rudall and Rose Model…$ 50
Optional decorative joint rings $ 80

Keys: Flong, F short, G#,
C,Bb,Eb,…$ 60/each

Shipping…$ 20

Total…$835

Michael has markedly upgraded the quality of his joint rings and keys (I got the new ones for the old price) I believe he will be changing his pricing to reflect his new costs.

The only fully-keyed flute anywhere near this pricing would be a Lehart which, from all reports, is a fabulous instrument.

They are, however, made of wood and therefore defeat my purposes in getting polymer. Also, my waiting time was about a month. You gotta love that.

Thanks for the info Patrick,

So is he still using the wide bands at the joints, or has he gone to the more trad thin bands like the Seery and most woodenflutes?

C’mon man, we want to see some pictures! Especially some close up’s of the new keywork…

Loren

Patience…patience. I’m working on it.

I’ll try to post a tune or two too.

Dont leave a pad saver in , the moisture just stays there and eventually rot the pads. I use silicon caulk for my pads and one application will last forever. If interested, I can show you how. Email me private.

Shouldn’t that be, “Email me, Private!”

Yes sir!

Stuart

interested, I can show you how. Email me private.

Just out of curiousity…why would you want him to email your privates?

At last, at last professional* photos are now available of this fine instrument on my professionally* designed website.

Here’s the link:

*Which is to say taken by a professional veterinarian

PS: James (peepj) if the pictures are useful to you feel free to right click and steal them.

My next adventure is to figure out how to post a sound clip on my really swell website.

Cheers,

Doc

My God Doc what a beautiful family. What special people you are. It`s a pleasure to know ya.

Tom

I’ve also enjoyed the family photo! My family is a mini-sized version of Docs.

Dang Doc, that’s one lovely flute you have there!

That’s the prettiest durn M&E flute I think I’ve ever seen.

And I must agree, you have a lovely family! You look like very friendly folks! Don’t know how you keep up with that many kids, though…

Just by way of update:

When I first recieved the M&E Rudall I quite liked it but after spending several weeks of quality time (during which the flute has taught me how it wants to be played) I am really impressed.

The tone and volume are just excellent…couldn’t be happier
