Go up to the top, and click on “Profile”. There is a setting in there to “hide my online status”. Click on that, and your name will be hidden. The only ones that can see it will be moderators and administrators.

Sure you can - and without changing your profile. Just don’t actually log in unless you want to say something. As long as you don’t log in, you can lurk and read to your hear’s content without giving away your presence.

I really like the feature that shows who is browsing the forums (without having to look specially, that is).
It gives me a warm glow inside to see my friends (and enemies 
) all looking at the same stuff I am, even when they’re on the other side of the globe. Makes the world seem slightly smaller and less scary!
