Lunasa Tunes books

Trying to learn a tune from a Lunasa CD, I have some difficulties to remember all the changes and variations that they do each time they are playing it. So, it’s certainly a silly question :stuck_out_tongue: but I was wondering if they give several ways of playing a tune in their tunes books sold on their website, or if there is only a sheetmusic like on thesession.org… ? Does anyone have bought one of this book? is it worth ?

Nicole

I haven’t seen the latest, Notai but in their first book they have the tunes in order of CD tracklisting with some comments for most tunes. They aren’t exact transcriptions but it is the arrangement close to how it’s played on the CD.

I don’t have mine with me right now… I think they can’t possibly have noted every variation. I do know that they moved things into “playable” keys, even if they recorded them with Bb instruments.

Jennie

I’ve got all their books and as far as I’m concerned they are gems. As Aaron said they are not exact transcriptions of all their variations, but are enough to get you started if your ears alone aren’t enough. Jennie is right that they do have more “playable” versions of tunes they do in Bb or odd time signatures. For instance Thunderhead was written in 7/8 but they have a 6/8 version there if you aren’t feeling adventurous. Having these books helps me and my band learn these things faster (particularly the one’s in 7/8 like Thunderhead and Road to Barga)…but don’t stop at the notes! Listen to what they do on the CDs, and sure go in that direction, but make it your own too.

Last year when Lunasa was in Hawaii Kevin Crawford sat in with our band for a gig. Talk about a thrilling but nerve-wracking experience! Anyway, we had the termidity to play a few Lunasa tunes which we have morphed into our own. After playing these Kevin was kind enough to say “Seems like I’ve heard those somewhere before… Glad you did something new with them.”

Clark

Thanks for your opinions. It seems that it could be a good idea for a next birthday gift
and Clark ! oh yes! I can imagine that … playing with kevin Crawford ? what a stressing time  but a famous memory !!

i can’t find a price on their website for the books - does anyone have this info?

The first book is £12, the second book is £17 or you can get both for £25.

Does anyone know of a source of these two books in the US? Given the exchange rate, they’re pretty pricey right now. I don’t mind paying the price to order them direct from the Lunasa site, but shipping adds about another $20.

Alternatively, does anyone have a copy of either that they would part with?

Herb, I sent you PM.

Has anyone received an order from the Lunasa on-line store in recent history?

I ordered both these tune books from them on August 11th, and the status of my order on their site still says “processing”, even though they claim to ship within a 5-day timeframe.

I tried e-mailing their order info site several times over the past few days and the e-mails all get bounced back as the domain rejects them due to an “unrouteable address”.

Has anyone here ever had difficulty with receiving purchases from the Lunasa on-line store? I hope my $62 isn’t lost in cyberspace.

EDIT: Well, I guess I should’ve checked the mail before posting the above, as the books arrived today. I still thought the site would have indicated my order was “shipped” instead of “processing” before I actually received it. Fifteen days from Ireland to Canada is quite exceptional as far as shipping times go – I didn’t expect to receive these for another couple weeks at least. Oh, yeah, the e-mail address on the printed receipt is info@lunasa.ie, which is different from the e-mail link on the web site. This no doubt explains why my e-mail bounced.
