Lunasa in Pasadena

Anybody going to go to this? I sure am! I think this is the same group that brought in The Boys of Lough a year or so back.

“…the hottest Irish acoustic band on the planet.”

  • Irish Voice
The members of Lúnasa are redefining Irish music by going right to the heart of its rhythms. With its distinctive use of the upright acoustic bass teamed with percussive guitar, the group seeks out the essential heartbeat of a tune. “There are lots of great melodies in Irish music but often people don’t hear the rhythms underneath,” says founding member fiddler Sean Smyth. “We try to relate the swing or energy out of the music, using new rhythms, letting each instrument add its own unique layer. We’ll play the same tune over and over searching for the groove, exploring it. We let the music find its pulse.” The result is a sound that, though distinctly Irish in flavor, touches on jazz and other improvisational music forms.

Im going!
I saw Lunasa, at Cal tech two years ago, nice venue.
The Boys of the Loch was also a great concert, especially the duel whistle solo, where he played two whistles at once.
See ya there!
Jon

Hmmm, tough call here, as I’d get to see Kevin again, and he was, indeed, so very nice to record a track for “Wooden Flute Obsession 2”. But the So. Cal Piper’s Tionol concert is the same night. And I doubt the boys have time to come down to it.

Jon,
Yeah I was thoroughly inspired by Cathal’s dual whistling. I figured out how to do it myself on a few tunes. Obviously the key is to tape the first three holes on one (as long as you are playing a tune pitched in the key of G). People are always impressed by it.

Hi Micheal,
Got my tickets today for Lunasa. Not many good seats left, I hope you bought your ticket already! I got row C in the odd section. (fits my style)
Stage left should be on Kevins side…

I called up the box office about a week ago and they said they had only sold about 150 tickets and it seats a thousand. Last time I went there I did the “rush” ticket thing as I am technically a student and I would get tickets for $10. I wanted to make sure I got a good seat though…the lady said to call back about a week before the concert and she could give me a better idea. The nice thing about the rush tickets is that if people don’t claim their tickets, I get them, and that could be really good seats (or really bad)…ahhhhh difficult choices…
