Does anyone have a list of good tunes for playing on a low whistle?
Scottie
I think that’s going to depend on what you think is a good tune. A tune that one person thinks rocks on a “low” might sound horrible to your ears. Although there are probably some that most agree sounds good on a “low”. Some airs, for example.*

The only issue is personal taste - you can play any tune on low that you can play on high - so see what from your repertory you prefer on which… Of course the different timbre tends to lead towards certain kinds of (clichéd!) choices , but unless you have hand size/span, hole size/fingering, accuracy/speed issues, there shouldn’t be any technical difference - just what you fancy.
I particularly like to play the 4 part setting of The Monaghan Jig on low whistle, amongst other things.
You got in before me, Jem. Play anything you like on the thing. It can handle exactly what any other simple windy type blowy thingie can handle.
BTW, although I’ve tried for some while, I’ve never been that happy with my own playing of the Monaghan on whistle. Pre-haps I’ll 'ave a go later Ron.
Thanks for the info guys. I have seen several on you tube play The Butterfly song which sounds pretty good on a low whistle. I guess they consider it a slip jig. Can someone explain what that means?
Thanks,
Scottie
The Butterfly is a tune, not a song (songs by definition have lyrics/vocals!) and yes, it is a slip jig, which means it is in the time-signature 9/8, i.e. three triplets of quavers (or equivalent) per bar, basic rhythm = duh-buh-duh duh-buh-duh duh-buh-duh.
I have several low whistle demo clips on my YT channel which may interest you - the video clip link in my signature below (not a whistle clip) will take you to my YT stuff.
I have three tunes up on YouTube that you might like to try - Cape Clear is a favourite of mine to play. Its a link in my signature. If you look at my favourites on YouTube you will see lots of tunes that I play (not recordings by me, but the recordings that I practise against), or would like to play on the whistle.
Hope that helps.
Thanks so much Jem and Phil. You are both awesome whistle players. The music clips were great. Thank you very much.

Awesome and in the same category as Jem? You have made my day… thanks. ![]()
