Hello C&F. I am posting this message because I am producing a Low Whistle dvd for beginners/intermediate players that will be out in the late fall of this year 2005. Hopefully, all will go smoothly with the production and the filming locations.
The dvd will be atleast 1 hour long with lots of things to look forward to. There are a number of good tutorials out there for players to draw information from. However, I simply wanted to ask the board if there are perhaps some ideas that you would like to see addressed that’s not addressed normally in tutorials ( I have not as yet seen or heard of a Low Whistle dvd on the market as yet. Maybe I will be the first I am not really sure). Regardless, I will bring something very unique to the project.
I made some room on the dvd for some ideas!! There are atleast 7 segments on the tutorial. Ofcourse, I have the dvd already in the late stages in terms of the content. But, ideas from others are always appropriate & welcomed.
Again, if you see a need for something really unique that you would like addressed, I would add an 8th segment to the video that will address some ideas. If I receive responses from the board I will look at them all & consider the responses that would work best for the production.
Thank you all sincerely. Look forward to hearing from you.

Maybe your path is already set - but - may I point you in the direction of a CD-ROM with selectable sections.
People nowadays, primarily myself, do not take the time to go through real-time presentations - like the news. I want it in chunks and in my preferred order.
Good luck with the project.
So THIS is why you’ve been (so generously) offering playing tips on the board. Thanks for clearing that up for those who wondered about it.

Thank you for sharing with the whistle community
Sounds like an interesting idea. Hope it goes well.
Anything that makes a positive contribution to the general knowledge pool is fine by me.Hope it all goes smoothly.
Slan,
D.
I would opt for the cd rom too, as this would make it usable all over the world, as opposed to a DVD which usually are for only particular regions.
Besides that, it would be nice to have somebody make a GOOD low d tutorial, as there are none yet besides the low whistle book which has cd’s but sometimes it’s nice to have someone show you.
Is it going to be a trad one Talbert or is it going to suit your own style more like on your cd?
Personally I would think it nice if you had something “unique” on the cd rom like how to do particular styles you play yourself…
Or suggestions how to develop your own style…
succes and greetings

Thanks for your comments. I will consider the CDROM.
To answer your question Berti as to whether it will feature my own style of playing or TRAD. This is the part that I need to be really careful with because as I play the low whistles my own style tends to come out naturally. It’s definitely non-traditional Low Whistling.
My new-age sound is very personal & strickly for live performances or cd work (it’s who I am as a musician). You mentioned perhaps I could demonstrate how to develop your “own” sound on the tutorial. This is a good idea but that can be learned by lots of listening to other players & see what they are doing with the whistle & the music & change it to suit yourself (find what you like). To put this on the tutorial is really very difficult & takes loads of time to show someone on film. I do appreciate the fact that you enjoy the sound that I bring to the low whistle on my cd. But, its hard to put on film as a teaching aid because it’s improvisational stuff. (Some footage of Davy Spillane will also be on the film & he does address some aspects that are very worthwhile hearing. In terms of learning to find your own way).
So, in doing the dvd I’v decided to “try” to keep my own style away from the film just so as not to confuse those who are watching for learning purposes. It has to be approached differently & not at all similiar to a performance. Otherwise, it would distract from the viewers who are trying to learn something from it. Ofcourse, my own sound will come out but I will minimize this for teaching purposes. The dvd opens with a pensive slow air the way that I normally would play as an introduction only. The rest is teaching & at the very end I am blasting away on some reels to conclude. This is a motivator to beginners. They need to see it played at full speed so that they can now put it all together & absorb it all. But, not until the end. It’s like telling a story. It has to flow well.
P.S. My photographer is an Emmy award winner! He works with CBS on certain projects. He is amazing to watch. I have developed camera angles that I have “never” seen in any tutorial. It’s being filmed as if you are watching a movie with lots of scenery to add color to the film (It gets a little hard seeing anyone sitting there teaching for an hour. So, we are making it really cool. It’s being filmed mostly in a cave. Great acoustics.)!
Thanks much.
Sounds interesting indeed! I’m fond of bats. But you probably don’t have any in the film.
If you are a whistle maker & would like your web-address on the credits of my video pls drop me a PM. I feel it best to leave it up to the makers themselves if they would like to be mentioned to pm me privately.
Again, I am only using the makers that give me the permission to do so. This is the safest & best way to proceed. I’ll leave it up to you. -Thanks
P.S. I have already been given permission from the copyright owners of “The Low Whistle Book” to feature there book in the video. The book has really given me various pointers over the years as an artist (regardless of your skill level the book has become a great tool for learning to all) & I am so very pleased to have them behind my film presentation. Thank you again for your support.
Thank you
