Low Whistle: Can't get a good seal

Using the dixon low d (non tunable)

Short fingers, can reach holes properly. But R3 affects R2, where the R2 hole is biggest. Finger ain’t fat enough to cover it properly if R3 is closed (some stretch pulls the finger away a bit).

Any method to improve the seal?

I’ve never tried it, but somebody on the board mentioned putting a band-aid around the finger that is having problems creating the seal. I guess it gives your finger a bigger, cooshier area to make the seal.

One thing that I’ve always found to help…switch to an even bigger whistle, play that for a while and then switch back!

Good luck,
Eric

just keep playing it until you get used to it.

Are you using a piper’s grip or trying to play with the pads of your fingers like on a high whistl?

already using piper’s grip from day one -

Actually, the Dixon is an easier reach than most low Ds, so I’d agree with Ross. just keep practicing and your hands will eventually come along. You might also try some finger-strengthening exercises to improve the muscle strength and tendon flexibility
