Loud reed

I still haven’t figure it quite yet but a a few of my reeds that I’ve produced are quite a bit loud in volume. Pitch is almost dead on, still the loud side though.

Anyone have a suggestion or two to knock it down a bit? My guess is I haven’t sanded or brought down the tails enough like say to 1.2mm.

You’re too much of a perfectionist. I’m currently playing one of your reeds. It’s a little loud, but then again my Thompson chanter has always been loud (compared to NO’G or BC chanters). Whenever I play a reed that’s not loud, its pitch is never reliable and it collapses too easily.

You’re correct about it the pitch being almost dead on. Hard D is dead on and not too hard to get when the reed is warmed up. Ditto for Back D. A is 440. The only note that gets me is C# which is ever so slightly flat but which is not noticable when playing jigs/reels (I have to give the bag a little more pressure to bring it up for slow airs). I had some initial trouble holding B’ and C’ but that was just teething problems for the reed. Now it’s settled in and I’ve no problem getting B’ and C’.

In short, you make good reeds for wide bore concert chanters. Keep up the good work.

I guess I can let them play-in a bit more until they settle in after a while. The main thing is that the more I make them the less chance of room for failure at it, especially the rolling staples part.. :laughing:
