Losing your tone!

Hi folks , in the early ( or late stages ) of playing have any of you ever got up one day and not been able to play a note?
I mean literally not being able to get a sound out of the flute?
This week I got a fright , for an entire day I couldn’t get a sound out and since then I’ve gradually got it back but still not to where I was last week.
All I can think of is I cut my lip shaving that day but thats a regular occurrence.
Scary!

Never that bad, but yeah, it happens. Like bad hair days.

Be careful with those lips, they are a part of the instrument!

In fact changes in the condition of the mouth can have a big impact.

The more usual thing for me which stops good tone is muscle fatigue in the jaw. A short break to relax and then a fresh start is enough, unless I played for hours, and really need a longer break.

Do you happen to have a cold or sinus allergies?

I find that when I am stuffed up, the aural/cranial/labial feedback mechanism doesn;t work and I sound like crap.

Blowing my nose until the ears pops does a world of good.

hi doyler–
With my Tipple low B, yes
with the other flutes-- have days where I sound really weak / squeaky

…then suddenly it clears up :boggle:
Hang in there…

I seem to remember Matt Molloy talking about this problem and if Matt Molloy deals with it…I wouldn’t get too worked up about it.

thanks guys , good to know im not alone.
im almost back to previous standard.

You say the sound has not completely come back? Check of loose fitting joints and/or small cracks and/or a moved or loose cork.
