Loretto Reid

An amazing Sligo whistle/flute player who has lived in Toronto since 87. She and her hubby(the equally amazing Brian Taheny)have 3CD’s out and,for my money, she is the finest whistle player on the planet. But not well known outside of Canada, unfortunately. I highly recommend her to all of you whistleheads.

Loretto is a phenomonen ok. She has a very distinctive style. In spite of the fact that she tends to lift her fingers fairly high she can play faster than a speeding bullet. Brian is certainly one of the best mandolin, tenor banjo and bouzouki players around. Pretty good fiddler too.

O.K., is there a web site we can click on to here her?

Here’s a good start:

The Masons Apron

Brilliant!

She’s a fantastic whistler and a really nice person, too. The best whistle tracks from Celtic Mettle are “The Youngest Daughter” and “That’s Lovely… That Is”, but as far as I know they aren’t available on-line anywhere. She’s also a good composer – “That’s Lovely…” is two of her own reels.

Nothing beats hearing her play live. She has a lot of great versions of standard tunes which she’s never recorded. The sort of stuff which either makes you want to practice ten hours a day or just give it all up…

For those that are interested in Loretto Reid’s playing, she always attends the the Goderich Celtic Festival – performing and teaching - ask Colomon.

The website for the festival is:

Quite true! I was there the last two years. Loretto is a wonderful teacher, and she and her husband play probably upwards of seven hours of music in concert over the week, as well as appearing in some of the better sessions late at night.

It’s nearly impossible to overstate how much I am looking forward to going there this August. I’m definitely reaching the time of the year where all of my music studies revolve around it – either studying things I should have learned from last year (like the Peter Horan tapes I made there) or studying things I want to know for this year (like listening to Newfoundland tunes over and over again). And every day I eagerly check my mail to see if this year’s Goderich session tunes CD is in it…

I hate to disappoint you Coloman, but when I left TO at the end of May, the Goderich CD had’t been made yet, due to extenuating circumstances. But e-mail Warren to find out for sure.

One of my friends from Windsor reports that she got her Goderich CD in today’s mail. And (back on topic for this thread) “There’s a cute little intro on the CD from Loretto!”

Hey Coloman-
Glad to hear the CD got done(the extenuating circumstance was the flood in Loretto and Brian’s basement…where the CD usually gets recorded). Would you mind e-mailing me the list of tunes on said CD-we moved out of TO 2 months ago, and I like to be able to teach/have extra copies of tunes on the CD for my Goderich classes.

Will do as soon as I have it myself.
