Loose Plugs

What do you do in the case of a Clarke original in which the pencilwood fipple has come loose?

I had this same problem a while ago. I took a tack hammer and a small nail and just gave it a couple of taps on each side. The resulting dimples have held my fipple in place ever since.

Good luck!

Reminds me of that old tune:

W, I’ll confirm the advice of the bloke who just posted. I’d recommend you drill a very tiny hole through the metal, first, so that the nail accomplishes its task easily.

Good luck

That’s part of the tweak that Thom Larsen of thewhistleshop.com does (the nail thing). I’ve used epoxy once too, but i think the nail is a much better way, since you want the block to be able to absorb moisture and expand freely.

The block in mine is very loose since I tweaked it. I’ve thought that beeswax might hold it in place, while still letting me move it a bit. Unfortunately, we don’t got no beehives around here, and I don’t know where to get beeswax–having missed a chance to swipe some from NorCall at the Gathering weekend before last.

I took vise grips and squeezed the sides of mine until they indented, to hold the block in place, then mashed the top of the windway down with a rubber hammer, and then my thumb, (mashed the windway down, not mashed my thumb with a rubber hammer) Probably could use a bit more tweeking cause I really get dizzy when I play the Clarke.

Just to clarify, I didn’t punch the nail right through the plug. I just gave the nail a couple of taps to make a small dimple in the metal on either side of the fipple. This ‘pinched’ the plug between the dimples, holding it in place.

No doubt, the nail through the plug would be a sturdier fix, but I’m not that great with tools so I took an easier route.
