I am looking for a nyckelharpa to buy - preferably one that is already located in the U.S.
Anyone know of such a beast that is for sale?

Here’s one built by Ake Ahlstrand and supplied in the US by Lark:

Also, here’s the link to the ANA (American Nyckelharpa Association). If anybody would know, they would:
Is that anything like a pennywhistla? ![]()
They look like a fiddle, a mountain dulcimer, and a hurdy-gurdy all crashed into each other.
Go to TVFolk and check out the Vasen videos. ![]()
Speaking as a Swede, and a dormant nyckelharpa-player (mine is broken) I’m amazed that there are so many people playing nyckelharpa and säckpipa in the US.
Hi Finn!
I know Mike Hulme here on C&F has a great experience on importing very nice sounding “nyckelharpor” from Sweden, he might even have one or two for sale so drop him a note. He is a very talented piper and nyckelharpa player and can give you some good advice on what to get. He also plays the nyckelharpa in an ITM setting ![]()
I know Mike got one nyckelharpa from Björn above that had a very nice sound (I picked it up) ![]()
Liraman is another multi instrumentalist and member here on C&F that plays the nyckelharpa among pipes, moraharpa, flutes, hurdy-gurdy and … He also lives in Nyckelharpa Mecca, north east of Stockolm ![]()
If the cost is an issue you can always import a used nyckelharpa from Sweden yourself.
Take a look here:

This is one of the most common classifieds for musical instruments over here.
Drop me a PM or mail if you need any help with translations or to get in contact with a seller.
Cheers!

BTW: If you tend to fall for cute girls with a major in geology, climatology, ecology or biology, in home knitted
sweaters with too long sleeves, and dreadlocks → the nyckelharpa will also work great as a chick magnet.

Why is it that girls into folk tend to be good looking, but scruffy? This is way OT but dreads is just not on. Trad nusic (in Scandinavia) seems to have a certain attraction for the bedreeaded, pierced and sorta weird crowd. What we in Sweden would call lajvarmuppar/medeltidstomtar.
Hi,
There are a few hundred nyckelharpa players in the US, according to the latest ANA figures. There is also a Yahoo group for the instrument. If you want to join then PM me and I will get the group owner to add you to the list. You might have more success locating a harpa from those members.
As Marcus said, you could always import one from Sweden, but you would have to know what questions to ask, as they are temperamental beasts!
I hope this helps.
If you have a MySpace, you should check out all the owners & players of Nyckelharpa there.
thanks for all the advice, web links etc…
Each one makes me want to play the nyckelharpa even more!
Mike Hulme check your pm, please
thanks again
