I edit the newsletter for our local branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann. One regular feature of the newsletter is “Cúpla Fonn” (A Few Tunes)…tunes that are maybe not as familiar to the local session players. As much as possible, I try to find things that kind of fit the season, and I try to mix it up among the jigs, reels, hornpipes, slides and slow airs. For example, in the issue that came out before Christmas, we had The Christmas Eve Reel, The Holly Hornpipe (from Wales) and “Dón Oíche úd i mBeithil.”
Our upcoming issue is coming out early in February, so I’m looking for tunes that may have some kind of endearment in the title (such as “My Darling Asleep” or "Mo Mhurinín Bán), or have some kind of link to relationships (whole or broken). Tunes that have some reference to St. Brigid would do as well. Unfortunately, most of those that I can think of (such as the aforementioned “My Darling Asleep”) are already commonly played hereabouts. I’d welcome some different tune suggestions…hopefully things for which I can get the notation off of JC’s Tunefinder, since gifs seem to work best for our format.
