I was wondering if anyone has ever come across a tunebook that gives Irish session standard tunes with no suggested ornamentation at all, just the absolutely bare melody left intact?
If such a thing exists I’d love to have a copy. I am discovering more and more that “pre-ornamenting” the tunes obscures part of the melody and in generally becomes quickly irritating–because I am starting to have my own idea of how I want to ornament the thing, and it usually doesn’t agree with the written version.

David J Taylor has produced a series of tunebooks, I don’t know them all but two books with tunes taken from two tapes for set dancing released by Na Piobairi Uilleann have tunes without ornamentation [and the added benefit of having tapes available where the music is played by fierce good players including Ronan Browne, Paul mCGrattan, Sean Og Potts, Padraig MacMathuna and loads others from the Dublin scene of the 80s/early 90s. He does suggest guitar chords.

Donncha O Briain’s Golden Eagle suggests rolls using the Half Moon symbol but that’s all. Mighty tunes in it.
I can only assume you have John Walsh’ collections downloaded, they are plain tunes too.

The non-Miles Krassen version of O’Neill’s 1001 has almost no ornamentation in it. The Miles Krassen version, on the other hand is chock full of obnoxious, confusingly notated and just plain presumptuous ornamentation.
